Where it comes from

The story of Adreana

The name spread through the popes as much as through the emperors — and one of them is a curiosity worth keeping. The only Englishman ever elected pope took the name Adrian: Nicholas Breakspear, born in Hertfordshire, a man who had been refused entry to his local abbey as a boy, made his way to a monastery in France, rose there, and ended in Rome. He held the office for less than five years in the twelfth century, and no Englishman has held it since. In the modern record the name arrives in America from two directions at once: from Italian families who had always had it, and from Spanish-speaking ones, where Adriana is among the steadiest women's names there is.

Meaning

From Hadria, a town in northern Italy

Hadrianus meant a man from Hadria, and everything else follows from that. The town gave its name to the Adriatic, and an emperor born into a family from there carried it to the whole Roman world. The feminine, Adriana, has been standard in Italian and Spanish for centuries.

Fashion outlook

Adreana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works unchanged in Spanish, Italian and Romanian, which very few names of any origin manage.
  • The meaning is settled and simple, which is rarer than parents expect.
  • It carries a long formal name and several short ones, so it fits a child and an adult equally.
What to consider
  • The e where Italian and Spanish write an i means it will be corrected to Adriana about half the time.
  • Adriana, Adrianna and Adrienne are all close enough to be confused with it in speech.
  • It is a long name in a country that shortens everything, so plan on the short form being the one she uses.
