English has a habit of swapping two letters and keeping the result. A bird was a bryd. Third was thridda. A horse was a hros. The process has a name — metathesis — and it is how a good many ordinary English words got their modern shape, and how Adrian becomes Adrain.

The story of Adrain

Metathesis is ordinary and productive. Old English bryd became bird, thridda became third, hros became horse, and waps became wasp; all four of those are the swapped versions winning. It happens most often around an r, which is exactly where it happens here. The name underneath belongs to an emperor who is remembered for stopping: Hadrian inherited an empire that had been expanding for two centuries, decided it had reached its limit, gave up the eastern conquests and built walls. The one across northern Britain is seventy-three miles long and much of it is still standing.

Meaning

from Hadria

From Latin Hadrianus, a man of Hadria — a town in the Po delta that gave its name to the Adriatic. The h was dropped in most languages early. This spelling swaps the last two vowels of Adrian, which is a documented kind of change rather than simply an error.

Adrain sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Adrain sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin origin traceable to a town that still exists.
  • Three syllables with a clear opening stress.
  • It serves either child, and the records show both.
What to consider
  • Adrian is the standard spelling and this one will be read as a mistake rather than a choice.
  • The swapped vowels invite a two-syllable reading that is not the name.
  • The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
