The story of Adline
The full name is fixed in English by a song. Sweet Adeline was written at the turn of the twentieth century, published after being rejected under a different title, and became the standard barbershop quartet piece for the next hundred years, sung by amateur groups on street corners and in bars until it was a byword for close harmony and mild drunkenness. When American women organized their own barbershop movement in the nineteen-forties, they named the whole organization after it, and Sweet Adelines International still has tens of thousands of members. A song written by two jobbing songwriters who needed a woman's name that scanned ended up naming an international singing society.
Meaning
Noble kind
A French diminutive of Adele, which is itself a shortening of a Germanic compound joining a word meaning noble to one meaning sort or kind. The same root produced Adelaide and Alice. The meaning belongs to the whole family and the missing letter changes none of it.

Fashion outlook
Adline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables is easier for daily use than three, and the change is real rather than cosmetic.
- Addie and Lina are two short forms with quite different flavors.
- The name has a documented line back to a Germanic compound.
- Adeline is the standard spelling and people will restore the missing letter and the missing syllable.
- The two forms sound different, so this is a pronunciation to be defended rather than a spelling.
- It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
