Adelina
Feminine · Old High German roots · “noble”
Adelina is the Latin-flavored version of a name Frankish and German families were writing down more than a thousand years ago — the old element adal, "noble", dressed in an Italian ending. Four syllables that fall away from the stress, ah-deh-LEE-nah, and every one of them says exactly what it looks like. It has been at home in Italian, Spanish and Romanian for centuries, which is why it needs no explaining in most of the world.

Where it comes from
From adal (Old High German, "noble") to Adelina
The story of Adelina
The root is Germanic: adal, "noble", a favorite building block in the names of Frankish and German nobility in the early Middle Ages, which gave the short name Adela. As those names moved south into Italy and the Iberian peninsula, the affectionate Latin ending -ina was attached, and Adelina became a name in its own right rather than a pet form. It spread with Italian, Spanish and Portuguese speakers, took firm hold in Romanian, and arrived in the United States with immigrant families from all of those places. In Mexico the related diminutive Adelita became famous through the Revolution-era corrido "La Adelita".

The Emilee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adelina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Emilee climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Emilee's path sketches the road Adelina is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, Spanish and Italian alike, so it survives travel and phone calls without translation.
- Several long-established short forms already in use — Addie, Lina, Ada, Adelita — so there is room to be formal or casual.
- Documented in continuous use for centuries, with a clear line back to the Germanic element adal.
- Native, not foreign, in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian — useful in a family that spans more than one language.
- Familiar in sound without being a name she will share with classmates.
- Adeline, Adelina, Adalina and Adelyn all circulate together, so she will likely spell it aloud fairly often, and forms that look nearly identical get mixed up.
- Four syllables plus a long surname can get unwieldy; it helps to say the full name out loud a few times before deciding.
- The short form Addie is shared with Adelaide, Adeline and Addison, so it may not identify her uniquely in a group.
- It is climbing steadily rather than sitting still — a name in this position tends to become more familiar over the years she is in school, though nothing about the current spread suggests a crowd.
