Our story of Adamary
Adam's ale is water, and English speakers used the phrase straight-faced for about three hundred years. It turns up in the seventeenth century, stays in ordinary use through the eighteenth and nineteenth, and is common enough in temperance writing that it becomes a mild slogan — the idea being that water is the only drink Adam had, so it is the original and sufficient one. Scots said Adam's wine. There is a whole family of these: Adam's apple for the larynx, which comes from a medieval idea about the fruit sticking; Adam's needle for a yucca; not knowing someone from Adam; and the old Adam meaning unreformed human nature. A single name in the first chapters of Genesis furnished English with a set of everyday phrases, most of which have now quietly gone.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The first half is the Hebrew name whose connection to the word for earth is made explicitly in the text. The second is Mary, whose own meaning has never been established. The compound is modern and has no separate meaning, and which half was used day to day is not recorded.
Pronouncing Adamary
ah-dah-MAH-ree
Four syllables with the stress on the third, following the Spanish pattern. English speakers often put the weight at the front instead, which produces a different rhythm.

Fashion outlook
Adamary sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are familiar, so nothing has to be spelled out by sound.
- It shortens cleanly to either half and both are complete names.
- Written solid it occupies one field on a form instead of two.
- Adamari and Ada Mary are both recorded, and systems will split it.
- English and Spanish stress it differently, so a bilingual family hears two versions.
- Only one half has any documented meaning, and it is the half that is a man's name.
