Where it comes from

Our story of Abree

Say Abree aloud and it is the French word abri, 'shelter', to the sound. In 1868 railway workers in the Dordogne cut into a limestone overhang called the abri de Cro-Magnon, and the geologist Louis Lartet found there the skeletons that gave early modern Europeans their popular name. None of that is where the American name came from — it came from Aubree and Bree and the bright, two-beat names of its day — but the sound is a good one to carry: a word for a place where people were safe.

Not established

Abree reads as a spelling of Aubree, from Aubrey, or as Abby and Bree run together; the record does not say which, and it has no separate documented source.

Abree sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 46 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Abree sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short and simple to say.
  • Comes with Bree and Abby as ready short forms.
  • Rare, so an Abree is unlikely to share her name.
What to consider
  • Aubree, Aubrey and Abrie are the spellings people reach for, so it will need spelling out.
  • It can be said with the stress at the front or the back; decide early.
  • Without a documented meaning, the story it has is the sound it makes.
