Where it comes from

The story of Abigaile

Abigail Williams was about eleven when she and her cousin began the accusations that became the Salem witch trials in 1692; when Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953 he made her seventeen and invented an affair with John Proctor to drive the drama. Abigail Scott Duniway came west on the Oregon Trail as a girl in 1852, lost her mother on the way, and spent forty years campaigning for women's suffrage in the Pacific Northwest; when Oregon's men voted it in in 1912, the governor asked her to write and sign the proclamation. Abigaile, with its final e, is one of the spellings American families have used.
