Abbigayle is Abigail written so that two other names show through it, Abbi at the front and Gayle at the back. Neither is really there. Underneath is a single Hebrew sentence that English has been spelling one way since the sixteenth century, and this version doubles a letter and stretches an ending without touching the sound at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Abbigayle

Abigail belongs first to a story in the book of Samuel and then to English and American public life. Abigail Adams ran a Massachusetts farm through a war, wrote the letters that make her husband's politics legible two centuries later, and signed her correspondence Portia, after the lawyer in The Merchant of Venice. Two generations earlier, Abigail Masham had arrived at Queen Anne's court as a poor relation and displaced Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, in the queen's affection, a quiet coup that helped bring down a government. The name was common enough in both centuries for playwrights to give it to servants as a matter of course. The elaborated American spellings came much later, when parents began treating Abigail as a base to be varied rather than a form to be copied.

Meaning

My father is joy

The name divides as avi, my father, and a verb from the root gil, to rejoice. That second half is where the English -gail comes from, and it is a verb rather than a noun: the sentence says the father rejoices, not that the child is joy. English has carried the whole thing as one word for so long that the seam has become invisible, which is exactly why respellings can cut it in the wrong place without anyone noticing.

Fashion outlook

Abbigayle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is one of the most recognizable in English, so it is never mispronounced even when it is misspelled.
  • It carries an unusually well-documented history of women who did things, from the Bible to the American founding.
  • Two very different short forms, Abby and Gail, so the child can choose a register rather than being stuck with one.
What to consider
  • This is the long way round to a familiar name, and every form, roster and boarding pass will need the spelling read out letter by letter.
  • The standard spelling is overwhelmingly the more common one, so the child will be corrected by people who assume a typo.
  • Splitting the name visually into Abbi and Gayle suggests a compound that is not there, which invites well-meant explanations that are wrong.
