Where each name comes from
Wes
west meadow (Old English, via Wesley)
Wes is the standing short of Wesley, and Wesley's parts are plain Old English: west and lēah, a clearing or meadow — the west field, first as a place, then a surname, then a name. Boys named Weston, the west town, arrive at the same Wes by another road.
west + lēah (Old English, 'west clearing') → Wesley (surname, then given name) → Wes
How it traveled
The surname Wesley entered given-name use on the strength of two brothers: John and Charles Wesley, the eighteenth-century founders of Methodism, whose admirers across America named sons for them by the thousands. Wes split off early as the everyday form — the name a man actually answered to — and eventually earned its own place on birth certificates, as working short forms often do.
Westin
western settlement, or the farm to the west
From Old English west plus tūn, a farmstead or enclosure — the same tūn that ends hundreds of English place names and eventually became the word town. Westin is a respelled form of Weston.
Old English west + tūn → Weston (English place name) → Weston (surname) → Weston (given name) → Westin
How it traveled
The name began as geography rather than identity: settlements lying west of somewhere else were simply called Weston, and England ended up with a great many of them, from Weston-super-Mare in Somerset onward. People who came from such a place took its name with them, and Weston became a surname carried across the Atlantic.

Out loud, and in short
Wes
WESS
One syllable; nothing to mispronounce.
Westin
WES-tin
Stress on the first syllable. In ordinary American speech it is indistinguishable from Weston, since both endings reduce to the same unstressed sound — which is why the spelling has to be given aloud rather than heard.
- Wes — The default short form, and a given name in its own right for generations of men — usable in every register from playground to office.
- West — Informal clipping; also stands alone as a first name in current American use.
- Westy — Affectionate and teammate-style, more common among children and in sports settings than at home.

The trade-offs, name by name
Wes
Strengths
- One syllable that nobody misspells, mishears or shortens further.
- Formal fallbacks exist if ever wanted: Wesley and Weston both lead home to Wes.
- On the American record since the nineteenth century, with bearers in every generation.
To consider
- People will assume it is short for something and ask 'Wes what?' — 'just Wes' becomes a stock answer.
- It offers no nickname retreat; the name he gets at birth is the whole wardrobe.
- Some formal settings still expect a longer name on the line.
Westin
Strengths
- Every part of it is already familiar English — no one has to be taught how to say it.
- Wes is an established, adult-ready short form with a long independent history of its own.
- Sits naturally beside the surname-first-name pattern American boys have carried for over a century.
To consider
- Weston is by far the more established spelling, so expect forms, teachers and coffee cups to default to -on. It is a lifelong small correction, easily made but never finished.
- Westin is also the name of a large international hotel chain, which is what most adults and most search engines will think of first. It fades with familiarity, but it is there.
- The name's wave is genuinely recent, so there are few grown Westins to point to yet. That cuts both ways: it will feel like his own, and he will rarely share it.
