The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Selene

Moon

Greek selēnē is simply the ordinary word for the moon; it is connected to selas, 'light, brightness'.

Σελήνη (Selēnē) → Selene → Selena → Selina

How it traveled

Selene comes straight from Greek σελήνη, the everyday word for the moon, which also served as the name of the Titan goddess of the moon — sister of Helios the sun and Eos the dawn in Hesiod's account of the older gods. Latin writers borrowed the name unchanged, and it traveled with classical learning into the modern languages of Europe, where the related forms Selena and Selina took hold alongside it.

Shelby

Willow settlement, or settlement on a ledge

Everyone agrees on the second half: -by is Old Norse for farm or village, left across northern England by Scandinavian settlers. The first element is argued. One reading takes it from Old Norse selja, willow, making it the willow farm — the reading usually given for the Yorkshire town of Selby, which Shelby is generally treated as a variant of. The other takes it from Old English scylf, a shelf or ledge of land, giving a settlement on a slope.

Selby (Yorkshire place name) → Selby (English surname) → Shelby (American surname) → Shelby (given name)

How it traveled

The name belongs to a large family of English place names that turned into surnames and then, in America, into first names. Shelby traveled as a family name first, carried west and planted on courthouses and county lines; Shelby County in Tennessee, which contains Memphis, is named for Isaac Shelby, as are towns in several other states.

Out loud, and in short

Selene

suh-LEEN

Two pronunciations are both in real use: the anglicized two-syllable suh-LEEN, and the classical three-syllable seh-LEE-nee, closer to the Greek. Spanish speakers generally say seh-LEH-neh. Expect to state your preference more than once.

  • Lena — The most portable short form, and a long-established given name in its own right across English, German and Scandinavian use.
  • Sel — Informal, family-and-friends level; almost never written on anything official.
  • Sele — Heard in Spanish-speaking families, where the vowels of the full name stay closer to the surface.
  • Selly — Affectionate and mostly used with young children.

Shelby

SHEL-bee

Stress on the first syllable. There is one pronunciation and no real regional variation in English; it reads correctly on sight for almost anyone.

  • Shel — The most common clipping, informal, used by family and close friends.
  • Shelbs — Casual and affectionate, mostly peer-to-peer rather than adult-to-child.
  • Bee — Drawn from the second syllable; occasional rather than standard.

The trade-offs, name by name

Selene

Strengths

  • The meaning is settled and easy to explain in one word — moon — which is rarer than parents expect.
  • Spelled the same in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, so it crosses borders without adjustment.
  • An unbroken presence in American records for more than a century, so it is familiar without being common.

To consider

  • The two-syllable and three-syllable pronunciations both have real currency, so she will spend some of her life correcting people — or, more likely, answering to both.
  • Selena, Selina and Céline are close enough that mail and roll calls will sometimes land on the wrong one. Céline is actually a separate name from a Latin root, but few people know that.
  • It is climbing rather than fading, so it may be noticeably more familiar by the time she reaches school than it is now — still far from crowded, but less of a solo act than the record suggests.

Shelby

Strengths

  • Spelling and sound match exactly — a Shelby rarely has to spell it twice, and almost never has to say it twice.
  • On US records continuously for more than a century, so it is neither new nor dated to a single moment.
  • Already familiar to Americans from the map: Shelby County, Shelbyville and a scatter of towns across several states.

To consider

  • It began as a boys' name in American use and now runs overwhelmingly to girls in US records. That road is not closed for a son, but he would be the one explaining it.
  • A great many Shelbys today are adults rather than children, so the name may register to some ears as a contemporary's name rather than a baby's. That gap tends to close as a child grows into it.
  • The Shelby Mustang and Cobra keep the surname in wide circulation, and some people will hear the car before the person.
