The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Sean
God is gracious
Irish Sean, from Norman French Jehan, from Latin Iohannes and Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious. The accent over the a in Irish marks a long vowel. Without it, sean is an ordinary Irish adjective meaning old, so the accent is doing real work.
Yochanan → Iohannes → Jehan → Sean
How it traveled
The J sound did not exist in Irish and the letter still is not part of the traditional Irish alphabet, which has eighteen letters. When Norman French brought Jehan to Ireland in the twelfth century, Irish substituted the nearest thing it had, which was the sh sound written with a slender s, and the name has been Sean ever since.
Soren
stern, serious
Søren descends from the Latin Severinus, a derivative of Severus, 'stern' or 'grave'. The meaning belongs to the Roman root, several removes back from the modern Danish name.
Severus → Severinus → Søren → Soren
How it traveled
The line begins with the Roman family name Severus and its extended form Severinus, borne by Severinus of Noricum, a fifth-century missionary along the Danube whose cult spread through the German-speaking lands. Latin Severinus traveled north and wore down in Danish mouths to Søren, which became one of the most heavily used men's names in Denmark for centuries — so common that it fed the surname Sørensen.

Out loud, and in short
Sean
SHAWN
One syllable, with the vowel of dawn. In Northern Ireland and parts of Ulster it is closer to SHAN, with the vowel of hand, and both are correct in their own regions.
- Seanie — The Irish diminutive, used at home and among friends.
- Shay — A separate Irish name often used as a clip; serves either child.
- Johnny — The English cousin, used by Seans who anglicize.
Soren
SOR-en
In American English, SOR-en, with the stress on the first syllable; some families say SOH-ren. The Danish Søren uses a rounded front vowel closer to the German ö, roughly SUR-en, which most English speakers do not attempt.
- Sor — An informal clipping used within families; not a standalone given name.
- Ren — Informal, taken from the second syllable; also exists independently as a short form of other names.
- Sonny — A general affectionate nickname sometimes attached to Soren rather than derived from it.

The trade-offs, name by name
Sean
Strengths
- A settled Hebrew meaning shared with the largest name family in Europe.
- One syllable, which very few names of this history manage.
- It is the Irish spelling rather than a phonetic English one, which settles the question of which came first.
To consider
- Shawn and Shaun are both common and this spelling will be read wrong by anyone meeting it cold.
- The accent that distinguishes the name from the word for old cannot be typed on most American forms.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
Soren
Strengths
- Spelled as it sounds for English readers — two syllables, no silent letters, no competing spellings in common American use.
- A documented line from Latin Severinus through Danish Søren, unbroken for well over a thousand years.
- Recognizable across Danish, Swedish, German, French and Italian in closely related forms, which helps with international family.
To consider
- The Danish original is Søren, and relatives or documents from Scandinavia may use that spelling — expect to explain the dropped ø, and expect the Danish pronunciation to differ noticeably from the American one.
- It resists shortening. Soren has no established nickname the way Charles or Elizabeth do, so a child will most likely be called Soren in full, all the time.
- The root meaning is 'stern' — accurate, and worth knowing if a parent is hoping for something sunnier. Meanings this old sit several languages away from the name people actually hear.
