Where each name comes from
Samuel
name of God — or, in the other reading, God has heard
Hebrew Shemu'el is read two ways: shem, name, with el, God, giving the name of God; or a form of shama, to hear, giving God has heard. The narrative in First Samuel attaches a third explanation, from a verb meaning to ask, which does not fit the letters. Two of the three are serious and the third is famous.
Shemu'el → Samouel → Samuel
How it traveled
Samuel is the hinge of the story: the last of the judges and the man who anoints the first two kings, first Saul and then, when Saul fails, David. He is also the one who argues against having a king at all, warns the people exactly what a monarchy will cost them, and is overruled.
Santiago
Saint James
The compound itself is not in doubt: Latin Sanctus Iacobus, contracted through Sant Iago. What the underlying Hebrew name Ya'aqov means is the older argument — readings include 'heel' or 'supplanter' and 'may God protect'.
Ya'aqov → Iakobos → Iacobus → Sant Iago → Santiago
How it traveled
The name behind it is Ya'aqov, Jacob, which passed into Greek as Iakobos and Latin as Iacobus, the source of English James and French Jacques. In medieval Spain the saint's title and name fused: Sant Iago, then Santiago, the patron of the shrine at Santiago de Compostela and of the pilgrim road that still carries his name.

Out loud, and in short
Samuel
SAM-yoo-ul
Three syllables, stress on the first. Spanish and French put the weight at the end, sah-MWEL. Hebrew Shmuel has two syllables and no vowel at all in the first, which English cannot manage.
- Sam — The default, used by most Samuels and serving either child; also a full name in its own right.
- Sammy — The warmer form, often the family version rather than the public one.
- Sami — The spelling used in Arabic-speaking and European families; a name of its own there.
Santiago
san-tee-AH-go
In Spanish the middle glides into one syllable: sahn-TYAH-go. Both are correct and most families answer to either.
- Santi — The standard short form in Spanish-speaking families, informal and used at every age.
- Chago — Informal, heard in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Yago — A clipping that also stands alone as a given name, especially in Spain and Galicia (spelled Iago there).
- Tiago — A clipping in Portuguese that became an independent given name, also spelled Thiago.
- Also Sant.

The trade-offs, name by name
Samuel
Strengths
- Spelled identically in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and German.
- Three thousand years of continuous documented use.
- Sam is instantly usable, serves either child, and is a full name on its own.
To consider
- It is very widely used and has been for most of the last two decades.
- Sam is shared with Samantha, Samson and Sampson, so it identifies nothing.
- The explanation the Bible itself gives for the name does not fit the name.
Santiago
Strengths
- Spelled the same way in Spanish, Portuguese and English, with no rival variants to choose between.
- Santi is a long-established short form, so the name comes with a ready informal option.
- A documented line back through Latin Sanctus Iacobus to the Hebrew Ya'aqov — the same root as James.
To consider
- It is climbing quickly and is now widely used, so a Santiago may well share a classroom or a team with another.
- Four syllables and mid-word stress mean some English speakers will hesitate on first reading, and a few will shorten it to Santi without asking.
- The name is inseparable from Saint James and the Compostela pilgrimage — a rich association for some families, a consideration for others.
