Where each name comes from
Salem
peace, whole, safe
From the Semitic root s-l-m, which gives Hebrew shalem 'complete, whole' and shalom 'peace', and Arabic salām 'peace' with sālim 'safe, sound'. The biblical Salem of Genesis 14 was understood by later Jewish and Christian writers as Jerusalem.
Shalem → Salēm → Salem
How it traveled
Salem begins as a place: the city whose king Melchizedek meets Abraham in Genesis, a name Greek and Latin translators of the Hebrew Bible passed on unchanged. English readers of scripture knew it for centuries before Puritan colonists in Massachusetts chose it for a settlement in the 1620s, and later Americans repeated it across the map — Salem in Oregon, Winston-Salem in North Carolina, New Salem in Illinois.
Sarai
my princess, or noblewoman
The traditional reading takes the Hebrew element sar, 'prince, chieftain, noble', with a possessive ending: 'my princess'. Many Semitic scholars instead treat Sarai and Sarah as two dialect forms of one word meaning 'noblewoman, princess', with no real difference in sense between them — which is why the renaming in Genesis is read as a change of form rather than of meaning.
Sarai → Sarra → Sara → Sarah
How it traveled
The name is Hebrew and reaches English through the Bible: Sarai is Abraham's wife in Genesis until the covenant chapter, where she becomes Sarah. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible flattened both forms into Sarra, and Latin and English followed with Sara and Sarah, so for most of Christian history the earlier spelling survived only inside the text.

Out loud, and in short
Salem
SAY-lum
Stress on the first syllable, matching the American cities. The Arabic name spelled the same way is said sah-LEEM, with the stress on the second syllable — worth deciding which you mean if your family uses both.
- Sal — The obvious one-syllable shortening; also long used on its own for Sally and Salvatore, so it reads as a nickname rather than a full name.
- Sale — Occasional informal clipping within families; rarely written down.
- Lem — Rare, back-clipped from the second syllable; used more as a household name than in public.
Sarai
sah-RYE
Three main pronunciations are all in real use: sah-RYE and SAIR-eye in English, and sah-rah-EE in Spanish, where the accented Saraí makes the stress explicit. None is wrong; the family simply has to pick one and repeat it.
- Sara — The most common short form, and a fully established given name on its own in English, Spanish and Italian.
- Sari — Informal, drawn from the first two syllables; also an independent name in Finnish and Hungarian.
- Sarita — Spanish diminutive, used affectionately within families rather than as a formal name.
- Rai — Informal, from the stressed end of the name; more common where the pronunciation is sah-RYE.

The trade-offs, name by name
Salem
Strengths
- Spelled the way Americans already read it, thanks to Salem, Oregon and Winston-Salem — little correcting, little repeating.
- Two syllables, one stress, no silent letters; it survives being shouted across a playground.
- Used for boys and girls in US records, so the spelling carries either child without adjustment.
To consider
- The Salem witch trials of 1692 are the first thing many Americans think of, and the talking cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch is the second. Both associations are Halloween-tinted rather than dark, but they are there for life.
- It leans toward girls in US records without settling there, and boys named Salem are the smaller group. Either child may meet an assumption about which one they are before anyone sees them.
- The name has been climbing steadily and recently. A Salem starting school now will likely be the only one, but that is less certain by the time they finish it.
Sarai
Strengths
- Documented in the Hebrew Bible and in continuous scholarly discussion since antiquity — a record almost no modern name can match.
- Works without adjustment in English and Spanish, and the accented Saraí is instantly readable to Spanish speakers.
- Every letter is one people already know from Sarah and Sara, so it is spelled correctly on the first try more often than most uncommon names.
To consider
- It will be heard as Sarah constantly, and corrected constantly — in roll calls, on forms, by teachers who read it fast. The two names are genuinely related, which makes the slip easy and permanent.
- There is no single agreed pronunciation. A child growing up between English- and Spanish-speaking relatives may answer to sah-RYE at school and sah-rah-EE at home, which some families find charming and others tiring.
- In Genesis, Sarai is the name given up rather than the name received. Most people never think about this; a few readers of scripture will, and it is worth knowing the point exists before someone raises it.
