Where each name comes from
Norah
Short form of Honora, from Latin honor — 'honor'
Two respectable lines meet here. Most trace Nora/Norah to Honora (Latin honor, 'honor'), which came into Ireland with the Anglo-Normans and became Nóra there. Others read it as a clipping of Eleanor or Leonora, which would carry it back through Old French to a Provençal name of uncertain sense. Separately, the very similar sound of Arabic Nura and Noor, 'light', is a different root altogether — same music, unrelated ancestry.
Honoria → Honora → Nóra → Nora → Norah
How it traveled
Honora arrived in Ireland with Norman settlers and was worn down in daily Irish speech to Nóra, which English speakers wrote as Nora or, with a decorative final h, Norah. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was thoroughly established in Ireland and traveled with Irish emigration to Britain, Australia and the United States.
Nyla
"one who attains" (Arabic) or "dark blue" (Sanskrit), depending on which root you follow
Two serious readings sit behind the same spelling. Nyla is a common English respelling of the Arabic Nāʾila (نائلة), from a root meaning to attain or obtain — so "achiever, one who wins what she seeks." It is also written for Nila or Neela, from Sanskrit nīla, "dark blue, indigo" — the same word behind the indigo plant. A third path is simply English sound-building, on the pattern of Kyla, Lyla and Layla, where no meaning is intended at all. Families choose which line they mean; the spelling does not decide it.
Nāʾila → Naila → Nyla
How it traveled
Nāʾila is a classical Arabic name of long standing, and it traveled with Arabic-speaking and Muslim communities into English-speaking countries, where it was written many ways — Naila, Nailah, Nyla. Separately, nīla, the Sanskrit word for dark blue, gave South Asia the name Nila or Neela, which also reached English spelling as Nyla.

Out loud, and in short
Norah
NOR-ah
Stress on the first syllable. The h is silent and always has been. Some American speakers say NOH-rah with a rounder first vowel; both are standard and nobody corrects either.
- Nonie — The traditional Irish-English pet form; informal, family-side rather than official.
- Nor — A one-syllable clip used casually among friends and siblings.
- Norrie — Informal diminutive, more common in Britain and Ireland than the US.
- Nono — A young-child nickname, usually outgrown.
Nyla
NY-lah
First syllable rhymes with "my." Families using the Arabic Nāʾila may say nah-EE-lah, and those using the South Asian Nila or Neela say NEE-lah — worth deciding early, since the spelling supports all three.
- Ny — The usual informal clip, used at home and among friends; rarely written down.
- Nylie — An affectionate lengthening, most often used by family with young children.
- Ny-Ny — A doubled nursery form, common in early childhood and usually dropped later.

The trade-offs, name by name
Norah
Strengths
- Short, two syllables, and pronounced correctly on first sight by nearly everyone — the only spelling question is whether the h is there.
- Works with little adjustment in Irish, Scandinavian, German, Hungarian and Italian settings.
- A documented record stretching back centuries in Ireland, with the short form firmly independent of Honora for generations.
To consider
- The h will be dropped. Nora is the more common spelling in the US, so forms, teachers and coffee cups will default to it, and correcting that becomes a small lifelong habit.
- It sits in a crowded sound-neighborhood with Nora, Cora, Aurora and Noa. Expect occasional mishearings on the phone and in roll call.
- The wave behind this spelling is recent, so most people carrying it are children rather than adults — the name reads young at the moment, though that shifts as those children grow.
Nyla
Strengths
- Two syllables, phonetic in English: most people read NY-lah correctly on first sight without being told.
- Sits in a well-known sound family alongside Lyla, Kyla and Layla, so the shape is already familiar to American ears.
- Has real standing in Arabic and South Asian naming traditions as well as English, which travels well across families.
To consider
- The spelling competes with Nyla, Nila, Naila and Nailah, all pronounced somewhat differently. Expect to spell it and occasionally to correct the vowel — a short, repeatable correction, but a lifelong one.
- Because the sound-alikes are everywhere — Lyla, Layla, Kyla, Mila — she may be called by a neighboring name now and then, particularly in a classroom or on a roll call.
- The meaning depends on which root a family claims. That is worth settling for yourselves, since relatives may assume a different one than you intended.
