II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Merritt

from the Somerset place name Merriott, read as 'boundary gate'

Two readings compete. The mainstream one traces the surname to Merriott in Somerset, with Old English elements usually given as 'boundary' and 'gate'. A second line takes it from a Middle English nickname later reshaped by the ordinary English word 'merit' — which is certainly what most English speakers now hear in it, whatever the older source was.

Merriott (Somerset place name) → Merritt (English surname) → Merritt (given name)

How it traveled

The name's first life was as a surname, attached to families from the West of England and carried to North America with them. From there it followed the well-worn American route by which a mother's or grandmother's maiden name becomes a child's first name, which is why Merritt turns up on people and on places alike — a Florida island, a Connecticut parkway.

Robin

bright fame — through Robert

Robin is the medieval French and English pet form of Robert, from the Germanic Hrodebert: hrod, 'fame', plus beraht, 'bright'. The garden bird carries the same name because English speakers handed it one.

Hrodebert → Robert → Robin

How it traveled

The Germanic name Hrodebert traveled into France with the Normans as Robert, and French speakers built the affectionate Robin from it with the little -in ending they used for pet forms. It crossed to England after the Conquest and became one of the commonest men's names of the later Middle Ages — common enough that the Robin Hood ballads, circulating by the fourteenth century, could use it as a plain man's name.

Out loud, and in short

Merritt

MERR-it

Two syllables, stress on the first, identical to the word 'merit'. The doubled t changes nothing about the sound.

  • Merry — The most natural short form in English; also exists on its own as an old-fashioned given name.
  • Mer — Clipped, informal, used the way Meredith and Mercer get shortened.
  • Ritt — Rare, informal, and used more often for boys than girls.

Robin

ROB-in

Stress on the first syllable. Said the same for a girl or a boy, and the same in French apart from a lighter final n.

  • Rob — Informal; also stands alone as a given name in its own right, more often for men.
  • Robbie — Informal, used for either sex, and independently given as a full name too.
  • Bin — Family-level and rare; almost never used outside the household.

The trade-offs, name by name

Merritt

Strengths

  • Reads correctly on sight for English speakers, since it matches a common word — no pronunciation lessons needed.
  • Works unchanged for a girl or a boy, with no separate feminine or masculine form to choose between.
  • Short, two syllables, and easy to say clearly across a room or a phone line.

To consider

  • The spelling will need repeating. Merritt, Merrit, Merit and Meritt all look plausible, and the double-t version is not the one people guess first.
  • It is now given mostly to girls, so a boy named Merritt will meet forms and teachers who assume otherwise. Not a problem, but a lifelong small correction.
  • Because it is also a plain English word, expect the occasional pun about merit, awards and report cards. It wears off quickly.

Robin

Strengths

  • Spelled and pronounced correctly on first sight by nearly every English speaker, with no accents or silent letters.
  • An unbroken record of use since the Middle Ages, so it reads as familiar rather than invented.
  • Works as-is in French, German, Swedish and Czech — one of the few English nicknames that needs no translation.

To consider

  • The girl–boy split is close to even, so the name alone tells a teacher or a form-filler nothing. Some families like that; others find the constant small corrections tiring.
  • Robyn is a well-established alternative spelling, which means a lifetime of being asked "with an i or a y?"
  • It is still strongly represented among older generations, so most adults will have known a Robin decades their senior — pleasant for some ears, dated to others.
