Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Maliyah
Not established
Two serious readings compete. One takes Maliyah as a respelling of Malia, the Hawaiian form of Maria and so ultimately of Hebrew Miriam. The other treats it as a name assembled within the -iyah pattern that spread widely in American naming, alongside Aaliyah, which comes from Arabic 'aliya, meaning high or exalted. Neither line has been established for this spelling in particular, and the two may simply have met here.
How it traveled
Maliyah is a young name, and its record is American rather than ancient. It sits at the meeting point of two things that were both very much in the air in recent decades: Malia, the Hawaiian form of Maria, and the run of names ending in -iyah that reshaped a whole corner of American girls' naming.
Marina
Of the sea
From Latin marinus, the adjective formed from mare, "sea" — Marina is its feminine form.
mare (Latin, "sea") → marinus → Marinus → Marina
How it traveled
The name begins as ordinary Latin: marinus, "belonging to the sea," which became the masculine name Marinus and the feminine Marina. Early Christian veneration carried it out of Latin and into Greek and then Slavic use, and it settled deeply into the Orthodox world, where it has been in continuous use for centuries.

Out loud, and in short
Maliyah
muh-LEE-uh
Three syllables with the weight on the middle one. Some families lean on the y and say muh-LEE-yah; both are in ordinary use and neither needs correcting.
- Mali — The most common everyday short form; used at home and among friends rather than on paperwork.
- Lia — Takes the tail of the name; also stands alone as a given name in English, Italian and German.
- Liyah — Informal, and shared with the other -iyah names, so it can travel between cousins and classmates.
- Mal — A blunt one-syllable clip, more common among siblings and teammates than adults.
- Also May.
Marina
muh-REE-nuh
Stress falls on the middle syllable. Spanish, Italian and Russian speakers say it with fuller vowels — mah-REE-nah — which is the same name, not a correction.
- Rina — The most common English short form; also used on its own as a given name.
- Mari — Informal, and independently a given name in Spanish, Italian and Japanese contexts.
- Marinka — A Slavic diminutive, affectionate and family-level rather than formal.
- Marisha — Russian diminutive (Мариша), used within families and among friends.

The trade-offs, name by name
Maliyah
Strengths
- The spelling is phonetic in English — a stranger reading it aloud will land on the right sounds, even if they later write it a different way.
- Several natural short forms already in use: Mali, Lia, Liyah, Mal.
- Sits inside a sound pattern Americans already know well, so it is familiar to the ear without being common in the classroom.
To consider
- Malia, Maliya, Maliah and Maleah are all in real use, so she will spell it out often. Choosing the version you want and being cheerfully consistent about it does most of the work.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If a clear, documented meaning is something you want to hand her, this name will give her two possible stories rather than one answer.
- It is a recent name with a recent wave behind it, so most people who carry it are still young. That newness is real, but it also means she is unlikely to share it with anyone in her grade.
Marina
Strengths
- One spelling works in English, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Russian, with no adaptation needed at a border or on a form.
- Reads correctly at first sight for most English speakers, because the word marina is already familiar.
- Long-established short forms — Rina, Mari, Marinka — rather than nicknames someone has to invent.
To consider
- It is also the English word for a boat harbor, so the association is instant and generally pleasant — but the name will occasionally be read as a place before a person.
- Expect a lifetime of small mix-ups with Maria, Mariana and Marine, all of which sound close and none of which are the same name.
- In bilingual families the vowels shift — muh-REE-nuh at school, mah-REE-nah at home. Both are correct, and children who grow up with two versions tend to manage them easily.
