II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Malik

King, sovereign — or master, owner

Both readings come from the same Arabic root m-l-k, which carries the ideas of ruling and possessing. With a short first vowel, malik is the ordinary Arabic word for a king; with a long one, mālik means master or owner. The same root gives Hebrew melekh and Aramaic malka, both 'king'.

m-l-k (Semitic root: to rule, to possess) → mālik / malik (Arabic) → Malik

How it traveled

The root m-l-k is old Semitic and turns up across the family — Hebrew melekh, Aramaic malka, Phoenician inscriptions — always circling rule and ownership. In Arabic it produced both the everyday word for a king and al-Malik, 'the Sovereign', one of the divine names recited in Islam, which is why Malik became a name given to sons wherever Islam spread: Arabic-speaking North Africa and the Levant, Persia, Turkey as Melik, South Asia, the Balkans, West Africa, Indonesia.

Mario

of the gens Maria, a Roman clan name

Mario descends from the Latin Marius, the name of a Roman clan rather than a word with a meaning. Attempts have been made to connect it to Mars, the god of war, and to an older Etruscan root, and neither can be demonstrated — Roman clan names are frequently older than the language that carried them. What Mario is not, despite the resemblance, is a masculine form of Maria. The two names arrive from different directions and only look like a pair in modern Italian.

Marius, a Roman clan name of unknown origin → Mario as the Italian and Spanish form → carried to America with Italian migration → an American peak at the start of the 1980s → a video game character takes the name worldwide

How it traveled

Nintendo's American staff were working in a rented warehouse near Seattle, and the character in their new arcade game had no name — the design documents called him Jumpman. The story their own people have told for decades is that the landlord turned up during a meeting to press them about the overdue rent, that his name was Mario Segale, and that the character was named after him half as a joke.

Out loud, and in short

Malik

muh-LEEK

muh-LEEK is the usual American reading. In Arabic and much South Asian usage the stress sits on the first syllable instead: MAA-lik. Both are correct for the same name, so it is worth deciding early which one your family will use.

  • Mal — The most common informal clip in English-speaking use; also serves as a short form of Malcolm and Malachi.
  • Leek — An informal short form taken from the stressed second syllable, used among friends and family rather than on paperwork.
  • Lik — Occasional casual clip, mostly heard between peers.

Mario

MAR-ee-oh

Three syllables with the stress at the front. Italian and Spanish speakers give the first vowel a purer sound and roll the r; the American reading is close enough that nobody is ever misunderstood.

  • Rio — Takes the back half and is a complete name in its own right now.
  • Mars — Playground shortening, and a nod to an etymology that cannot be proved.
  • Mimmo — An Italian family form, unrelated in sound and used only at home.

The trade-offs, name by name

Malik

Strengths

  • Works in many languages without translation — Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Bosnian, Indonesian, French — and is spelled the same way in most of them.
  • Two syllables, no silent letters, and a spelling most Americans have already seen in print.
  • A documented history stretching back to early Arabic, including the eighth-century jurist Mālik ibn Anas.

To consider

  • Two pronunciations circulate — muh-LEEK and MAA-lik — so expect to correct people, or to accept both. Choosing one and saying it consistently from the start saves years of small negotiations.
  • Maleek, Malick and Maliq all exist, so the spelling will sometimes need repeating even though yours is the most common one.
  • The name carries a clear connection to Islam through al-Malik, one of the divine names. For many families that is the point; if it is not yours, know that others may still hear it that way.

Mario

Strengths

  • It is recognized instantly in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese without any change of spelling.
  • The sound is warm and open, and the name has never been tied to a single generation.
  • It carries a Roman history, an Italian-American one and a global one, and a child can pick whichever he likes.

To consider

  • The video game character is the first association for everyone under fifty, and the jokes are unavoidable in childhood.
  • It is stepping back from its American peak, so it will read as slightly of its parents' generation for a while.
  • The meaning cannot be given honestly, because Roman clan names generally do not have one.
