II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Lola

short form of Dolores, "sorrows"

Dolores comes from the Spanish title María de los Dolores, Mary of the Sorrows, referring to the Virgin's Seven Sorrows. Lola is the household diminutive of that name; the sorrowful sense belongs to the devotional title, not to everyday use of Lola.

María de los Dolores → Dolores → Lola → Lolita

How it traveled

The name grew out of Spanish Catholic devotion: girls were named María de los Dolores for the Virgin's Sorrows, and Dolores was clipped in family speech to Lola, with Lolita as a further step down. By the nineteenth century Lola was circulating well beyond Spanish-speaking households, carried by stage performers and travelers into English, French and German use.

Luciana

light

Through Lucianus, a Roman name built on Lucius, from Latin lux, 'light'.

Lux → Lucius → Lucianus → Luciano → Luciana

How it traveled

The Latin lux gave the personal name Lucius, one of the oldest and most-used names in Rome, and Lucius in turn produced the derived name Lucianus — roughly 'of Lucius'. Luciana is its feminine form, and it settled most deeply in the Romance-speaking world: Italy, Spain, Portugal, and later Latin America, where it has been in steady use for generations.

Out loud, and in short

Lola

LOH-luh

Stress on the first syllable. In Spanish and French both vowels are fuller: LOH-lah. Spelling almost never needs to be repeated.

  • Lo — The commonest informal trim, used within families rather than on paper.
  • Lolo — Playful doubling used mostly with young children; note it means grandfather in Tagalog.
  • Lolita — The traditional Spanish diminutive of Lola; now carries the association with Nabokov's novel in English.
  • Lols — A casual British-style trim, mostly among peers and in texting.
  • Also Dolores.

Luciana

loo-see-AH-nuh

Standard in English and Spanish. In Italian the c is soft in a different way: loo-CHAH-nah. Both are correct for the name; it helps to pick one early and say it first when introducing her.

  • Lucy — The most common English short form; also a long-established given name in its own right.
  • Lu — Informal, widely used in Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking families.
  • Luci — Informal spelling of the same short form, closer to the parent name.
  • Ana — Drawn from the ending rather than the start; stands alone as a given name across Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Also Lucha, Cana.

The trade-offs, name by name

Lola

Strengths

  • Four letters, one obvious spelling, and it is read correctly on sight by English, Spanish and French speakers alike.
  • An unbroken record in American use stretching back well over a century, so it reads as inherited rather than newly coined.
  • Also charts in France and in England & Wales, which makes it travel well.

To consider

  • In Tagalog, lola means grandmother — a warm word, but if your family or community is Filipino, expect that double meaning to come up often.
  • The traditional diminutive Lolita now carries the association with Nabokov's novel in English, which is worth knowing before it arrives from someone else's mouth.
  • It is already a nickname, so there is not much left to shorten. Some parents like the finality of that; others miss having a longer version to grow into.

Luciana

Strengths

  • A settled, undisputed meaning — 'light' — reachable in one step through Latin lux.
  • Spelled the same in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian, so it travels without adjustment.
  • Comes with ready-made short forms already in use: Lucy, Lu, Luci, Ana.

To consider

  • Two correct pronunciations compete: the s-sound of English and Spanish, and the Italian soft-c 'loo-CHAH-nah'. Neither is wrong, but you will be correcting people in both directions.
  • The -ana ending sits close to Adriana, Juliana and Ariana, so mishearings and second-guesses are likely on the phone and at the doctor's office.
  • Lucianna and Luciana both circulate, and Lucia is close enough to be substituted by someone half-listening. Expect to spell it out.
