The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Lionel
Little lion, or young lion
From Old French lion (Latin leo, leonis) with the diminutive ending -el.
Leo (Latin) → lion (Old French) → Lionel
How it traveled
The root is the Latin leo, lion, which passed into Old French as lion; adding the affectionate -el ending produced Lionel. Norman French carried it into England, where it turns up in the medieval Arthurian romances as the name of Sir Lionel, a knight of the Round Table and kinsman of Lancelot, and in the royal family as Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, a son of Edward III in the fourteenth century.
Valentin
strong, healthy, vigorous
From the Latin adjective valens, 'being strong', via the Roman name Valentinus.
Valens → Valentinus → Valentine → Valentin
How it traveled
The root is the Latin verb valere, to be strong or in good health; from it came the Roman cognomen Valens and its extended form Valentinus. That extended form was carried by Valentinus of Rome, the third-century martyr whose feast Pope Gelasius I placed on 14 February at the end of the fifth century, and the same root produced the fourth-century emperors named Valentinian.

Out loud, and in short
Lionel
LY-uh-nul
Also commonly LY-nul in American English, with the middle syllable swallowed. French speakers say lee-oh-NEL with the stress at the end, and Spanish speakers using Leonel say leh-oh-NEL.
- Leo — The most common short form, and a fully established given name in its own right.
- Lio — Informal, closer to the French and Spanish pronunciations.
- Lonnie — An older informal short form, more often heard from earlier generations.
- Nel — Family-level nickname, rarely used outside the household.
Valentin
VAL-en-teen
American English usually gives VAL-en-teen or VAL-en-tin. French says vah-lahn-TAN with a nasal ending and no final consonant; Spanish says bah-len-TEEN with the stress on the last syllable; German, VAH-len-teen. All are correct in their own language, so it helps to decide early which one your family uses.
- Val — The standard English short form; also used on its own and shared with Valentina and Valerie.
- Tino — Informal, common in Spanish- and Italian-speaking families, clipped from the end of the name.
- Valya — Russian diminutive, affectionate and family-level; used for both Valentin and Valentina.
- Vali — Informal short form in Romanian and Hungarian usage.

The trade-offs, name by name
Lionel
Strengths
- Leo is built into it — a short form already known everywhere, needing no explanation.
- One dominant spelling in English, and it is the one people expect.
- Documented in continuous use since medieval England, so it carries no dated decade.
To consider
- The Spanish and Portuguese Leonel sounds close enough to cause a steady trickle of spelling corrections in bilingual settings, and the stress falls differently in each language.
- In English the pronunciation splits between three syllables and two — LY-uh-nul and LY-nul — and both are in real use, so he will hear each of them.
- A few very well-known living bearers, in music and in sport, mean the name arrives with an association attached for many people. It fades quickly once there is a child in front of them.
Valentin
Strengths
- Works unchanged in French, German, Spanish, Romanian and the Slavic languages — one spelling that crosses borders without translation.
- Has a ready-made short form in Val, plus Tino, Valya and Vali in other traditions.
- English speakers already recognize the letters through Valentine, so it is rarely misspelled beyond that one substitution.
To consider
- The Valentine's Day link is unavoidable, especially around February. For most bearers it amounts to occasional jokes rather than anything heavier, but it is there for life.
- Pronunciation shifts by language — VAL-en-teen, vah-lahn-TAN, bah-len-TEEN. He will be correcting people, or choosing not to, fairly often.
- Many English speakers will hear Valentine and write it that way. The final -e gets added on forms and email addresses more than you would expect.
