Where each name comes from
Lillie
The lily
The word is the flower's, from Latin, and it reached English very early — lilies were grown in monastery gardens and the word is one of the oldest plant borrowings in the language. Some bearers of this spelling come from Lillian instead, which is a separate name with a separate history.
Lilium → Lily → Lillie
How it traveled
Consider the lilies of the field: the line is famous and the flower is doubtful. Botanists who have looked at what actually grows wild in that landscape have proposed anemones, crocuses, poppies, irises and the common field flowers that come up in spring after rain — anything but the white garden lily that European painters put into the pictures.
Whitley
white meadow, or pale woodland clearing
From Old English hwīt, "white," and lēah, "wood, clearing, meadow" — the same lēah behind Ashley, Bradley and Shirley. Several villages in England carry the name, and the "white" almost certainly described the look of the land: chalky soil, pale stone, or light breaking through thinned trees.
hwīt lēah (Old English, "white clearing") → Whitley (English place name) → Whitley (surname) → Whitley (given name)
How it traveled
Whitley is one of the many English place names that turned into surnames and then into given names. Settlements called Whitley appear in Yorkshire, Cheshire and Berkshire, and Whitley Bay sits on the Northumberland coast; families who came from those places carried the name away with them.

Out loud, and in short
Lillie
LIL-ee
Two syllables, stress at the front. The doubled l keeps the vowel before it short, which is the one thing the spelling is doing.
- Lil — The name without its ending, brisk and durable.
- Lily — The commoner spelling of the same name, used interchangeably.
Whitley
WIT-lee
The h is silent, as in whistle. Stress falls on the first syllable. Some English speakers, particularly in parts of the American South and Scotland, give the wh- a breathier HWIT-lee; both are heard and neither needs correcting.
- Whit — The standard short form; also stands alone as a given name and a surname in English-speaking countries.
- Whitty — An informal, affectionate extension of Whit, mostly family use.
- Lee — Drawn from the second syllable; works as a standalone name and as a middle name.

The trade-offs, name by name
Lillie
Strengths
- The word behind it is concrete, familiar and entirely pleasant.
- It is short and easy for a small child to say about herself.
- It is both a vintage name and a current one, which very few manage.
To consider
- Lily and Lilly are both commoner and hers will be written as one of them.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well, though it belongs overwhelmingly to the girls.
- The flower is heavily associated with funerals in some countries, which is worth knowing.
Whitley
Strengths
- Reads correctly at first sight for English speakers — the -ley ending is already familiar from Ashley, Hadley and Riley.
- A transparent, documented meaning in Old English: white plus clearing or meadow.
- Comes with an established short form, Whit, which also functions as a name on its own.
To consider
- It will be heard as Whitney a great deal. The two names share a first syllable and a rhythm, and Whitney has far more history in American ears — expect gentle repeating and correcting.
- The "white" in the meaning is a description of landscape, not of people. Worth knowing in advance, since it is the first thing someone will ask about.
- For anyone who watched A Different World, the name comes attached to Whitley Gilbert. Often a warm association, but a fixed one.
