The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Legacy

something handed down; a bequest

The English noun traces to Latin legare, 'to bequeath, to entrust to a deputy'. Its earliest English sense was the office or commission of a legate; the sense of property left by will took over by the fifteenth century.

legare (Latin, 'to bequeath') → legatus → legatia (Medieval Latin) → legacie (Middle English) → Legacy

How it traveled

The line runs from Latin legare, to bequeath or depute, through legatus and Medieval Latin legatia — the office of a legate — into Middle English as legacie. In the fifteenth century the legal sense settled into what English speakers mean today: what someone leaves behind.

Lyric

of the lyre; the words of a song

From Greek lyrikos, 'of the lyre'. The everyday English sense — the words of a song — grew out of that older poetic one.

lyra (Greek: lyre) → lyrikos → lyricus (Latin) → lyric (English) → Lyric

How it traveled

The lyre was the small stringed instrument of ancient Greece, and lyrikos described verse composed to be sung with it rather than recited or staged. The word traveled into Latin as lyricus and reached English in the sixteenth century as a literary term, distinguishing sung poetry from epic and dramatic verse.

Out loud, and in short

Legacy

LEG-uh-see

Exactly as the common noun: three syllables, stress on the first. Because everyone already knows the word, the pronunciation arrives with the spelling and needs no correcting.

Lyric

LIH-rik

Said exactly like the English word: stress on the first syllable, short i. Almost no one has to be told twice.

  • Ly — Informal clipping used at home; not established as a standalone given name.
  • Ric — Informal, heard more often for boys, where it overlaps with the long-standing independent name Rick.
  • Lyri — Affectionate lengthening of the first syllable, family use rather than public use.

The trade-offs, name by name

Legacy

Strengths

  • The spelling is the ordinary English word, so it is written correctly on the first try by almost anyone.
  • Pronunciation is fixed by the noun — no regional variants, no second guesses.
  • One spelling serves a boy or a girl, with nothing to adjust.

To consider

  • It is a word before it is a name, and people hear the word each time. That can bring remarks about family, inheritance or expectation — friendly, usually, but frequent.
  • In American English the word does other work too: legacy admissions at colleges, and 'legacy systems' in tech, meaning outdated. Background noise rather than a real problem, but worth knowing.
  • No short form has established itself, so it will mostly be used in full — three syllables, every time.

Lyric

Strengths

  • It is an ordinary English word, so the spelling and the pronunciation are already known to everyone who reads it.
  • Two short syllables with a firm first-beat stress — easy to call across a room and easy for a young child to say.
  • Given to both girls and boys, so it does not have to be reassigned or respelled to fit either child.

To consider

  • The great majority of Lyrics are girls. A boy named Lyric will meet people who assume otherwise from the form alone — workable, but worth expecting.
  • Word names invite comment. Expect the music jokes, the occasional 'like song lyrics?', and a lifetime of people finding it a conversation opener.
  • Lyrica is the brand name of a prescription drug, and Lyra is a separate and rising name. Both get confused with this one now and then, usually only on paper.
