The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Keanu
the coolness; the cool breeze
Hawaiian ke (the definite article) plus anu (coolness, chill). English sources often expand it to "cool breeze over the mountains," which is a poetic reading of the same two words rather than a separate meaning.
ke anu (Hawaiian, "the coolness") → Keanu
How it traveled
Keanu comes straight out of the Hawaiian language, where ke anu is ordinary vocabulary before it is ever a name — the sort of naming tradition that draws on weather, place and plant. It reached the continental United States mainly through the actor Keanu Reeves, whose father's family was Hawaiian, and mainland records for the name begin only after his career did.
Sam
from Samuel — either "God has heard" or "name of God"
Sam has no meaning of its own; it inherits Samuel's. Hebrew scholars read Shemu'el two ways: as shama' plus El, "God has heard," which is how the birth story in 1 Samuel plays on it, or as shem plus El, "name of God." Both readings are old and both are serious. Sam also serves as a short form of Samson, a separate Hebrew name tied to the word for sun.
Shemu'el → Samouel → Samuel → Sam
How it traveled
The root is the Hebrew Shemu'el, borne by the prophet who anoints Israel's first kings; Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible rendered it Samouel, and Latin passed it to western Europe as Samuel. English speakers clipped it to Sam early and never stopped — the short form was well established long before the Puritans of the seventeenth century made Samuel a household name in England and then in New England.
Where a reading is contested the note says so — this page does not turn a guess into a fact. The chain is each name's recorded forms, oldest first; the story is its opening, told in full on the name's own page.
Out loud, and in short
Keanu
kee-AH-noo
That is the common American English pronunciation. In Hawaiian the first syllable is closer to keh, giving keh-AH-noo; both are heard, and Hawaiian speakers will generally use the latter.
- Kea — The usual informal clipping; also stands on its own as a Hawaiian given name and surname.
- K — Initial-only nickname, used casually among friends and teammates rather than by family.
Sam
SAM
One syllable, short a as in "ham." It reads the same way in English, Dutch, German and French, with only the vowel color shifting.
- Sammy — The standard informal extension, used most in childhood and within families; also recorded as a given name on its own.
- Sammie — Spelling variant of Sammy, used for both boys and girls.
- Samuel — Runs the other direction — many families register Samuel and use Sam daily, so the longer form works as the formal option.

The trade-offs, name by name
Keanu
Strengths
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in Hawaiian — five letters, no silent parts, no competing spellings in wide use.
- Widely recognized in the US thanks to one very well-known bearer, so most people will not ask twice how to say it.
- A transparent meaning in a living language, not a reconstruction: ke plus anu, the coolness.
To consider
- For most Americans the name points to a single famous actor. That association is friendly, but it will come up throughout a child's life, and it is likely to be the first thing anyone mentions.
- The vowel run invites errors: Kianu and Keanue in writing, kee-ANN-oo in speech. Nothing severe, just a lifetime of small corrections.
- It is a word from a living Hawaiian-language tradition. Families with no connection to Hawaii sometimes want to think that through, and some choose it anyway, with care about pronouncing it as Hawaiian speakers do.
Sam
Strengths
- One syllable, spelled exactly as it sounds — no correcting, no repeating, no alternate spelling to guard against.
- Comes with a built-in formal companion: register Samuel and Sam is already waiting inside it.
- Used as a first name in its own right on American records for as long as those records have existed.
To consider
- Sam arrives from two directions: boys through Samuel and Samson, girls through Samantha. Both roads are well traveled, so people meeting the name in writing often will not know which to expect — a small, lifelong round of clarifying.
- As a name it currently sits with older generations far more than with children, which can read as either quietly classic or slightly grandfatherly depending on the room.
- At one syllable it gives you almost nothing to work with rhythmically. Beside a short surname it can land very clipped, so it is worth saying the full name aloud before deciding.
