Where each name comes from
Kayla
not settled; linked to Kyle and to a Yiddish Kayla
Kayla has two serious roots. One is Kyle, from Scottish Gaelic caol, narrow or slender, with a feminine ending. The other is an older Yiddish woman's name, Kayla or Keyle. Many American families also heard it simply as Kay with -la added. None of these has been shown to be the source.
Kyle / Kayla (Yiddish) / Kay → Kayla
How it traveled
Kayla came into American use from several directions at once, and no single story explains why so many families chose it. Once it was familiar it grew a family of spellings of its own.
Kira
Either "lord, ruler" or "dark-haired" — the two lines behind the name give different answers
As the Russian name Кира, it is the feminine of Kir, which descends from Greek Kyros — the name of Cyrus the Great of Persia — usually read as "lord" or "master." As an English respelling of Irish Ciara, it goes back to Old Irish ciar, "dark, black," describing dark hair or coloring. Most American Kiras sit somewhere between the two, and both readings are legitimate.
Kyros → Kir → Kira
How it traveled
The oldest thread runs through Greek Kyros, the form in which the Greeks wrote the name of the Persian king Cyrus; Russian took it up as Kir, and made Kira its feminine. That Russian Kira traveled west with emigration in the twentieth century and was easy for English speakers to say on sight.

Out loud, and in short
Kayla
KAY-luh
Two syllables with the stress on the first; the ay is the long a of day.
- Kay — The natural short form, and a name in its own right.
- Kayls — An informal short form common among friends.
Kira
KEER-ah
KEER-ah is the usual American pronunciation. A minority say KY-rah, following the spelling Kyra, so it is worth deciding which you mean and saying it first at introductions.
- Ki — Informal, family-level shortening; rarely written down.
- Kiki — Playful and informal; also stands alone as a given name in several languages.
- Kira-bear — The kind of home nickname built by adding rather than cutting, since the name is already short.

The trade-offs, name by name
Kayla
Strengths
- It is easy to say and spell, and nearly everyone knows it.
- It sounds warm and friendly.
- It works in many languages without changing.
To consider
- It is closely tied to one generation, so a Kayla will often share her name with classmates and co-workers of her age.
- There is no settled meaning to give when someone asks; the honest answer is that it has several possible roots.
- A very few boys have been given it; for them it will read as a girl's name everywhere.
Kira
Strengths
- Short, phonetic and readable on sight for English speakers — no silent letters and no ambiguity about syllable count.
- Belongs to Russian, Irish and Greek naming traditions at once, so it lands as a real name in a wide range of families.
- Has been on American records continuously for generations without a boom-and-bust curve behind it.
To consider
- The spelling competes with Keira, Kyra, Kiera and Ciara, all in genuine use. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and expect the occasional KY-rah from someone reading it cold.
- Among younger viewers, Kira is widely recognized as the alias of the central figure in the anime Death Note. It is a passing association rather than a permanent one, but it is real and worth knowing about.
- It is familiar enough that nobody will ask what it means, and uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate — a middle position that suits some families and feels too quiet to others.
