Where each name comes from
Katie
Traditionally read as "pure", through Katherine
Katie comes from Katherine, and Katherine from the Greek Aikaterine, whose own origin has never been settled. The familiar "pure" reading came later, when Greek and Latin Christians linked the name to katharos, "pure" — which is also why the spelling shifted toward Katharina. So "pure" is a genuine, centuries-old reading of the name, but it is an interpretation laid onto an older word nobody has decoded.
Aikaterine → Catharina → Katherine → Kate → Katie
How it traveled
The parent name, Aikaterine, is Greek and very old; it traveled west through Latin as Catharina and Katherina, and by the Middle Ages it had a form in nearly every European language. English speakers shortened it almost immediately and then kept shortening it — Katherine to Kate, Kate to Katie, with Kitty, Cathy and Kay along the way.
Zariyah
Not established for this spelling.
What is documented sits one step back. Arabic Zahrah, behind the widely used Zahra and Zehra, comes from a root for blooming and brightness. Zaria is a major city in northern Nigeria and also a girl's name in American use. Zariyah is a newer written form standing near both, and no single etymology has been fixed to it.
How it traveled
The names Zariyah stands among are old and much traveled: Arabic Zahrah, from a root tied to blossoming and brightness, produced Zahra and Zehra across the Arabic-speaking world, Turkey and the Balkans, while Zara has long been at home in English. Zaria is both a girl's name in American use and one of the large cities of northern Nigeria.

Out loud, and in short
Katie
KAY-tee
One pronunciation everywhere in English, with the stress on the first syllable. Speakers rarely need it spelled out, though the choice between Katie and Katy does have to be stated.
- Kate — The older short form Katie itself grew out of; used both as a nickname and as a full given name.
- Kat — Informal, and the most common modern clipping; also used on its own.
- Kay — An older short form from the Katherine family, still in use among earlier generations.
- Kit — Informal and now uncommon, but a genuine part of the Katherine cluster.
- Also KT.
Zariyah
zuh-REE-uh
A fuller four-syllable zah-REE-yah is also common, and some families say ZAR-ee-uh with the stress up front. All three are heard; whichever you use, say it first and people will follow.
- Zari — The everyday short form, and a given name in independent use in the US.
- Riya — Taken from the second half; also a standalone given name in South Asian use.
- Z — Informal, mostly among friends and siblings.
- Zaz — Playful and family-only rather than anything she would write down.

The trade-offs, name by name
Katie
Strengths
- Instantly readable and sayable by anyone who speaks English; no explaining, no phonetic detours.
- Has an unbroken record in American statistics stretching back to the earliest years of the data — never absent, never a novelty.
- Works as a full legal name or as the short form of Katherine, Kathryn, Katelyn and Kaitlyn, so a longer certificate name is optional, not required.
To consider
- Katie is strongly represented among adults now in their thirties and forties, so a baby Katie will likely share her name with colleagues of her parents before she shares it with classmates.
- Katie and Katy both look normal, so expect a lifetime of small corrections — and Kaytee, Katey and Cathy will each turn up in someone's address book.
- Because it began as a diminutive, some people will assume it is short for something and ask for the "real" name. Putting Katherine or Kathryn on the birth certificate is one way around it, though plenty of Katies have never needed to.
Zariyah
Strengths
- Zari is a ready-made short form, already established as a name in its own right, so the everyday version needs no inventing.
- The -iyah ending is familiar enough in American English that most people hear and repeat the name correctly the first time.
- Distinctive without being strange — a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom, yet nobody has to be taught how to say it.
To consider
- Zaria, Zariah, Zaryah and Zariyah all circulate at the same time. Forms and rosters will come back with the wrong y or h, and she will be spelling it aloud fairly often.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled — zuh-REE-uh, zah-REE-yah and ZAR-ee-uh are all in use — so expect to offer a correction now and then rather than assume one.
- No settled meaning attaches to this spelling. If you want a translation you can hand a child, Zariyah gives you a family of bright, blooming roots nearby instead of a single answer.
