Where each name comes from
Kaia
Two readings compete: a Scandinavian short form of Katarina, or a feminine take on kai, 'sea'
The oldest documented road is Kaja/Kaia as the Nordic pet form of Katharina — which makes its ultimate meaning as unsettled as Katherine's own, traditionally glossed 'pure' through the Greek katharos. Many American parents instead read it alongside kai, 'sea' in Hawaiian and Japanese. Separately, Kaja is an Estonian name and an Estonian word for 'echo'. All three are real; none has ownership of the spelling Kaia.
Aikaterine → Katharina → Kaja → Kaia
How it traveled
The line begins with Greek Aikaterine, which traveled north through Latin Katharina and was worn down in Norwegian and Danish speech to Kaja — pronounced with a soft y, and spelled Kaia by families who wanted the sound written out. It stayed largely a Nordic and Estonian name until the late twentieth century, when English-speaking parents took to short vowel-rich names and the Kai- cluster in particular.
Reese
Ardor, enthusiasm; fiery zeal
The Welsh root rhys is usually glossed as ardor or enthusiasm, and often rendered in name books as "fiery" or "ardent".
Rhys → Rees → Reese
How it traveled
The name begins in Wales as Rhys, borne by princes of the medieval Welsh kingdoms and common enough among ordinary Welsh families that it hardened into surnames — Rees, Reese, Rice, and Preece, from ap Rhys, "son of Rhys". Those surnames crossed the Atlantic with Welsh emigrants and settled into American records, where Reese became the usual spelling.

Out loud, and in short
Kaia
KY-uh
Two syllables, rhyming with the first part of 'kayak' only if you say it KY-ak. A minority of American speakers say KAY-uh, and in Norwegian and Estonian the vowel sits closer to KAH-yah. Expect to state your preference once when you introduce her.
- Kai — Informal clip; also a full given name in its own right, used for boys and girls.
- Kay — Informal, and a standalone given name well represented among older generations.
- Kiki — Family-level nickname rather than a public one.
- Katarina — Not a nickname but the longer formal name Kaia historically shortens from, if you want a full option on paper.
Reese
REESS
One syllable, rhyming with peace. The final sound is a hissed s, not a z; the same pronunciation covers Reece, Rees and Welsh Rhys.
- Reesie — Affectionate home form, mostly used with young children.
- Ree — Informal clipping; rare, since the full name is already one syllable.
- Rhys — Not a nickname but the Welsh original — some families use it as the formal written form.

The trade-offs, name by name
Kaia
Strengths
- Short, two syllables, no silent letters — most people can say it after hearing it once.
- Established short forms already in circulation: Kai and Kay both stand alone as names.
- A real Nordic and Estonian name, so it works without translation across Scandinavia and in Canada as well as the US.
To consider
- The spelling competes with Kaya, Kaiya, Kaja and Kaja/Kaja variants, and all of them sound similar. She will likely spell it aloud fairly often.
- KY-uh and KAY-uh both circulate in the US, so first-day-of-school corrections are part of the deal.
- The name is on a steady upward path and clusters with Kai, Maya and Mia, so it may feel less rare over the years than it does now — familiar company rather than a crowd.
Reese
Strengths
- One syllable, one clear sound — easy to say, easy to hear across a playground, and it needs no shortening.
- Instantly familiar to Americans as a word and a surname, so it is read correctly on sight even by people meeting it for the first time.
- A documented line back to medieval Welsh Rhys, which gives it real depth for families with Welsh roots.
To consider
- In the US, Reese is also the name of a very well-known peanut butter candy, spelled identically. Most children shrug it off, but expect the joke at some point.
- Four spellings compete — Reese, Reece, Rees, Rhys — so the name will often be spelled back to you wrong even when it is heard right.
- Most American Reeses are girls, so a boy called Reese may be assumed female on paperwork and rosters, even though the boys' line is the older one.
