The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Ivanna
God is gracious
The sense comes from the Hebrew name Yochanan, which lies behind John, Jane, Joan and every Ivan.
Yochanan → Ioannes → Ioann → Ivan → Ivanna
How it traveled
The root is Hebrew Yochanan, carried into Greek as Ioannes by the translators and writers of the early Christian era, and from there into Church Slavonic as Ioann. Slavic speech wore it down to Ivan, one of the most widely used men's names in Eastern Europe for centuries, and Ivanna is its feminine form — spelled with the double n in Ukrainian, with a single n as Ivana in Czech, Croatian, Serbian and Slovak.
Nadia
"hope" in the Slavic line; "dewy, tender" or "generous" in the Arabic line
These are two readings because they are really two names sharing a spelling. As a Russian and wider Slavic short form of Nadezhda, it means "hope" — Nadezhda itself translates the Greek Elpis, and stands beside Vera and Lyubov, Faith and Love, in that traditional trio. As Arabic نادية, it is linked to nadā, moisture or dew, hence "dewy, tender", and by extension generosity; a second Arabic reading connects it to nādī, "one who calls". Neither line borrowed from the other.
Elpis → Nadezhda → Nadya → Nadia
How it traveled
The Slavic road begins with Nadezhda, a name formed to carry the meaning of the Greek Elpis, "hope", and used in Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Ukrainian; its everyday short form, Nadya, traveled west and settled into English and the Romance languages as Nadia. The Arabic road is separate and just as old in its own tradition: نادية, a woman's name across the Arab world and beyond it, in Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia.

Out loud, and in short
Ivanna
ee-VAH-nah
That is the Slavic and Spanish pronunciation and the usual one. Some English speakers reach for ih-VAN-uh instead, rhyming the middle with 'van'; both are heard in the US, so it is worth deciding early which one your family uses.
- Iva — The most common short form, and a standalone given name in South Slavic countries.
- Ivy — An English-language shortening that doubles as a well-established name of its own.
- Vanna — Informal, taken from the second half; also stands alone in Italian usage.
- Ana — Widely used in Spanish-speaking families, and a full given name in its own right.
- Also Ivi, Nana.
Nadia
NAH-dee-uh
NAH-dee-uh is the usual American pronunciation and the one closest to both the Slavic and Arabic originals. NAY-dee-uh is also heard in English and some families prefer it, so it is worth deciding which one you want and saying it first at introductions.
- Nadya — The standard Slavic short form of Nadezhda; used both as a nickname for Nadia and as a full given name in its own right.
- Nada — A given name on its own in Arabic and in Serbian and Croatian, and used informally as a shortening in English-speaking families.
- Nadi — Casual, mostly family and friends.
- Nads — Informal and school-aged; the kind of clipping English does to almost any two-syllable name.
- Also Didi.

The trade-offs, name by name
Ivanna
Strengths
- Shares a root with John, Jane, Joan and Juana, so the name has a long, unbroken documented line behind it.
- Reads correctly in both Spanish and Slavic languages without respelling — useful in a bilingual family.
- Several ready-made short forms, including Iva, Ivy and Ana, each of which also works as a name on its own.
To consider
- The single-n Ivana is the more familiar spelling to many Americans, so expect a lifetime of gentle corrections — and of forms coming back with one n.
- Pronunciation splits between ee-VAH-nah and ih-VAN-uh depending on who is reading it aloud. Neither is wrong, but she will be introducing herself often.
- Said quickly in English, the first two syllables can land close to 'I wanna'. Most people never notice; a few schoolyards will.
Nadia
Strengths
- Spelled the same way in English, Italian, Spanish, Polish, French and Romanian — it crosses borders without needing to be adapted.
- Two well-established traditions behind it, Slavic and Arabic, so it is at home in a great many families.
- Short, phonetic and easy to write early; a child can spell it themselves before kindergarten is over.
To consider
- Two pronunciations circulate in English, NAH-dee-uh and NAY-dee-uh, and you will spend some years correcting the one you did not choose.
- Nadya, Nadja and Nadiya are all in use, so occasional misspellings come with the territory — though Nadia is the spelling most Americans reach for first.
- It has been easing back from its high point, which means most people carrying it now are young adults rather than small children. A child named Nadia will likely be the only one in her class.
