The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Hannah
favor, grace
From Hebrew hannah, from a root meaning to be gracious or to show favor. The same root lies behind John, Anne, Jane, Joanna and a dozen others, which makes this one of the most productive words in the entire European name stock.
Channah → Anna → Anne → Hannah
How it traveled
The name belongs first to a woman in the book of Samuel who prays at a shrine so intensely and so silently that the priest watching assumes she is drunk, and the song she sings afterwards is one of the oldest poems in the Hebrew Bible. Anne, Anna, Ann and Nan all descend from her.
Victoria
Victory
The Latin word, unchanged. It belongs with a small group of Roman deities who were personified qualities rather than characters: Victoria, Fortuna, Concordia, Pax. A Roman would not have distinguished sharply between the word and the goddess, which is why the name reads as a plain noun and as a divine name at once.
victoria → Victoria
How it traveled
The altar stood in the senate house for four hundred years, and senators burned incense on it before business. A Christian emperor had it removed; a pagan one put it back; and in the fourth century the prefect of Rome, a distinguished and moderate man, wrote to the emperor asking for it once more, arguing that so great a mystery could not be approached by one road only.

Out loud, and in short
Hannah
HAN-uh
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The final h is silent in English and is there because Hebrew transliteration put it there; several European languages drop it without changing the sound.
- Hanna — The same name without the final h; used interchangeably in speech.
- Han — A single-syllable clip that has become common among younger bearers.
- Nan — An old English familiar form of the same name, cut from the back.
- Hannie — The affectionate form, standard in Dutch and used informally in English.
Victoria
vik-TOR-ee-uh
Four syllables with the stress on the second. Spanish and Italian say the same thing with a fuller final vowel; French drops the last two syllables and rebuilds the ending. All are current in the United States.
- Vicky — The standard English short form, and the one most Victorias are actually called.
- Tori — Cut from the middle rather than the front; modern, and a complete name in its own right.
- Via — Made from the first and last sounds; short, current and unrecognizable as a shortening.
- Vita — An older English contraction, and a full name in Italian and Latin use.

The trade-offs, name by name
Hannah
Strengths
- It is known everywhere in the Western world and needs no explanation in any of it.
- The meaning is documented and simple, which not every long-established name can claim.
- It reads identically forwards and backwards, which children notice and enjoy for years.
To consider
- Hanna without the final h is common enough that the spelling will be asked about often.
- It has been near the top of the American lists for a long time, so a classroom may hold more than one.
- It is recorded for sons as well, but so rarely that a boy carrying it would be explaining it constantly.
Victoria
Strengths
- Spelled almost identically in Spanish, Italian, German, Polish and Russian, and understood everywhere.
- An unusually rich set of short forms covering four different registers.
- The meaning is a single positive word that needs no explaining in any language.
To consider
- The name is on record for boys in small numbers, so it is not the absolute signal it appears to be.
- It is long for everyday use, and a short form will be chosen for the child by other people.
- The Victorian associations are strong and pull in two directions at once, formality and stuffiness.
