The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Goldie
Gold, golden
The name comes straight from the English word, and the Yiddish Golde behind it means the same thing. It began as an affectionate term for golden hair before it settled into a name in its own right.
Golt (Middle High German, 'gold') → Golde (Yiddish) → Golda → Goldie
How it traveled
Goldie grew out of the English word gold, first as a nickname for the fair-haired and then as a given name proper, in the era when Ruby, Pearl and Opal were also being written on birth certificates. At the same time it did double duty as the English form of the Yiddish Golde — a name long used among Ashkenazi Jewish families in Central and Eastern Europe, and one that traveled with them to New York and beyond.
Keira
Dark, dark-haired
The root is the Irish adjective ciar, 'dark'. Keira is a phonetic English spelling of Ciara, the feminine of Ciarán. One caution: Keira is often filed alongside Kyra and Kira, which come from an unrelated Greek and Persian line meaning 'lord' or 'lady' — similar sound, different root.
ciar (Irish: dark) → Ciarán → Ciara → Kiera → Keira
How it traveled
The name begins with the Irish word ciar, 'dark', which gave the man's name Ciarán and its feminine counterpart Ciara. Ciara belonged to a seventh-century Irish saint, and the name stayed in Irish use for centuries before Irish naming came back into fashion across the English-speaking world in the twentieth century.

Out loud, and in short
Goldie
GOHL-dee
Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly like the word gold with an -ee added. No regional variation to speak of in English.
- Goldie — Already a diminutive form, and used as the full given name on official documents as often as anything else.
- Golda — The longer, more formal counterpart; some families register Golda and use Goldie every day.
- Goldy — An informal respelling, mostly seen in writing rather than heard.
- Gee — A casual family shortening, used within households rather than in public.
Keira
KEER-uh
Two syllables, stress on the first. The whole point of this spelling is that it produces KEER-uh on sight, where Ciara often does not.
- Kiki — The most common informal short form; used at home and among friends rather than on paper.
- Kei — A clipped one-syllable form, mostly spoken rather than written.
- Kay — Informal, and also a standalone given name of its own, more common among older generations.

The trade-offs, name by name
Goldie
Strengths
- Spelled the way an English speaker already spells gold — almost never misheard, almost never misspelled once heard.
- Continuously present in American records since the earliest ones, so it has a long unbroken history rather than a sudden arrival.
- Works as both the full name and the everyday name, so no nickname is required unless you want one.
To consider
- Goldie is a very common name for dogs, cats and goldfish, and a child will probably meet that at some point. It passes, but it is worth knowing before you commit.
- The golden-hair origin is close enough to the surface that people may comment on it, whatever color your child's hair turns out to be.
- Most people carrying this name today belong to much older generations, so it may read as a great-grandmother's name to some ears — that is precisely what makes it available again now.
Keira
Strengths
- The spelling does the pronunciation work: most English speakers read Keira correctly the first time, which Ciara cannot always claim.
- Short, two syllables, no silent letters — easy to say, easy to write once learned.
- It carries a documented Irish root going back to an old adjective, ciar, and a saint's name from the seventh century.
To consider
- Keira, Kiera, Kira, Kyra and Ciara all sound close or identical, so expect a lifetime of spelling it out — and of receiving mail addressed to one of the others.
- One very well-known actress carries this spelling, and for many people the name will call her to mind first. That association is friendly, but it is strong.
- Births cluster in a fairly narrow stretch of years, so the name may read as belonging to a particular moment rather than as an old classic — though it is uncommon enough now that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
