The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Garrett
from Germanic roots meaning "spear" plus either "brave" or "rule"
Garrett is a medieval English form of two different names that had already blurred together by the Middle Ages: Gerard, from ger "spear" and hard "brave, hardy", and Gerald, from ger "spear" and wald "rule". Both are serious readings, and for most bearers the two lines are impossible to separate.
Gerhard → Gerard → Gerrard → Gearóid → Garrett
How it traveled
The spear-names Gerhard and Gerwald were widespread in the Frankish and German-speaking lands well before the Norman Conquest, and Norman speakers brought Gerard and Gerald into England, where scribes flattened both into Garrard, Gerrard and Garrett. In Ireland the Norman-Irish FitzGeralds used the Irish Gearóid, which was anglicized back as Garrett, giving the name a long Irish life alongside its English one.
Zakai
pure, innocent
From the Hebrew root zakah, to be clean or pure; in later legal Hebrew, zakkai means innocent or acquitted.
Zakkai (Hebrew) → Zakchaios (Greek) → Zacchaeus (Latin, English) → Zakai
How it traveled
Zakkai is recorded in Hebrew scripture as a family name among those who came back from Babylon, and it stayed in use through the rabbinic centuries — Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai, one of the central figures of Judaism after the destruction of the Second Temple in the first century, was known by his father's name. Greek-speaking writers rendered it Zakchaios, which passed into Latin and English as Zacchaeus, the tax collector who climbs a tree in the Gospel of Luke.

Out loud, and in short
Garrett
GAIR-it
Two syllables, stress on the first. Some speakers use a flatter first vowel, closer to GARR-it; both are ordinary and neither needs correcting.
- Rett — Informal short form taken from the second syllable; also stands alone as a given name.
- G — Initial-only nickname, common among friends and teammates rather than family.
- Gare — Casual clipping used mostly by peers.
- Gary — Occasional short form, though it is far better established as an independent given name of its own.
Zakai
zah-KY
The Hebrew stress falls on the second syllable, rhyming with 'sky'. Some American families say ZAK-eye, with the weight up front. Both are in real use, so it helps to settle on one early and repeat it.
- Zak — Informal short form; also stands alone as a given name in its own right, usually spelled Zac or Zach.
- Kai — Taken from the second syllable; a widely used independent given name, so it may attract its own following.
- Zaki — Informal; also an established Arabic given name, which can cause it to be heard as a separate name.
- Z — Single-initial nickname, common in American schoolyards and among teammates.

The trade-offs, name by name
Garrett
Strengths
- A recognizable English spelling that most people can write down on the first hearing, even if the double t occasionally needs confirming.
- Belongs to a large family of names — Gerard, Gerardo, Gérard, Gearóid — so relatives abroad usually have a version they already know.
- Documented continuously in American records from the beginning of those records, and still given to children now.
To consider
- The double consonants invite Garret, Garett and Gerrett, so expect an occasional spelling check on forms and coffee cups.
- It sits close to Gareth and Garrison in sound, and adults will sometimes reach for the wrong one on first meeting.
- Garrett is still a widely borne surname, so it can read as a last name in formal or alphabetical lists.
Zakai
Strengths
- A documented Hebrew name with a record stretching back to scripture and the rabbinic period, despite the modern-looking spelling.
- Two syllables, five letters, and no silent letters — easy to write out by hand early in school.
- Ends in Kai, a sound Americans already know well, so most people can repeat it after hearing it once.
To consider
- It is regularly confused with Zachary and Zachariah, which come from a different Hebrew root meaning 'the Lord remembers'. Expect to correct the assumption that Zakai is short for Zach.
- Two live pronunciations compete — zah-KY and ZAK-eye — and a child with this name will be introducing it, and re-introducing it, fairly often.
- The spelling is not the standard scholarly one, so Zakkai, Zachai and Zakkai will all turn up on forms and mail.
