The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Ezra
help, or helper
From the Hebrew עֶזְרָא (ʿEzrā), understood as a short form of names like Azariah, 'God has helped'.
ʿEzrā (Hebrew) → Esdras (Greek) → Esdras (Latin) → Ezra (English)
How it traveled
Ezra belongs to the Hebrew Bible: the scribe and priest of the Book of Ezra, who led exiles back from Babylon and reestablished the Law in Jerusalem in the fifth century BC. Greek translators rendered the name Esdras, and it passed through Latin in that shape, which is why Spanish and Portuguese Bibles still say Esdras while English ones say Ezra.
Michael
Who is like God? (Hebrew)
The Hebrew Mikha'el is a rhetorical question rather than a statement — the expected answer being no one.
Mikha'el → Michaēl → Michael → Michel → Miguel
How it traveled
The name belongs first to Hebrew, where Mikha'el appears as the archangel named in the Book of Daniel and again in Revelation, cast as a guardian and a warrior. Greek-speaking scribes wrote it Michaēl, Latin kept that spelling almost unchanged, and from Latin it spread across Christian Europe, taking a local form in each language.

Out loud, and in short
Ezra
EZ-ruh
Stress on the first syllable in English. In Hebrew the stress falls at the end, closer to ez-RAH.
- Ez — The usual informal clip, used by family and friends; rarely written down.
- Ezzy — Playful extension of Ez, mostly heard in the early years.
- Ezra — Most bearers simply go by the full name — it is already short enough to need nothing.
Michael
MY-kal
Two syllables in English, with a light second one. The German and Dutch pronunciations give it three (MEE-khah-el), and French Michel is mee-SHEL — worth knowing if the family speaks more than one language.
- Mike — The default short form in American English, informal but used in professional life too; stands alone on business cards and ballots.
- Mikey — Affectionate, most often used in childhood and within families, though some men keep it for life.
- Mick — More common in Britain, Ireland and Australia than in the US; historically also used as a slur against Irish people.
- Micky — Informal, also spelled Mickey; occasionally given as a name in its own right.
- Also Misha, Mitch.

The trade-offs, name by name
Ezra
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds, and familiar enough that most people write it correctly the first time.
- A documented record stretching from the Hebrew Bible through Puritan England and New England to the present day.
- Two syllables, so it sits easily beside longer surnames and needs no shortening.
To consider
- It is rising quickly, so a child named Ezra now is more likely to meet others than one named a decade ago. Right now that means a classmate here and there rather than a crowd, but the trend is upward.
- Ezekiel is popular at the same time, and people sometimes assume Ezra is short for it. A small, lifelong correction.
- The biblical roots are unmistakable, which some families want and others would rather not foreground.
Michael
Strengths
- One of the most widely recognized spellings in the Western world — rarely needs to be repeated, and almost never needs to be spelled out.
- Long-established short forms, from Mike to Mikey to Mick, so a boy has room to choose how he is addressed.
- Present in US records for as long as such records have been kept, and still given steadily today rather than only remembered.
To consider
- It is very well represented among adults, so a Michael will likely share his name with a colleague or two at some point in his working life.
- Expect Mike. Even parents set on the full name usually find the world shortens it, especially at school and on sports teams.
- The -ael ending gets transposed to Micheal surprisingly often by typists and forms — a small, lifelong correction.
