II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Emerie

from Germanic elements meaning 'power, ruler' joined to amal

The second element, ric, is agreed on: 'power' or 'ruler'. The first, amal, is read two ways — as an ordinary word for 'work' or 'labor', giving 'work-ruler', and as the name of the Amal, the ruling Gothic line, giving something closer to 'ruler of the Amals'. Both readings have serious support, and neither has pushed the other out.

Amalric → Emmerich → Aimery → Emery → Emerie

How it traveled

The root is the Germanic name Emmerich, which traveled west and turned up in Normandy as Aimery before crossing to England with the Normans, where it settled into Emery and then hardened into an English surname. The same name went east as well: Hungarian took it as Imre, honored in the eleventh-century royal saint Emeric, and Italian shaped it into Amerigo — the form that gave the Americas their name.

Frankie

Frenchman; one of the Franks

The Latin Franciscus meant "Frenchman" or "Frank". The tribal name Frank itself is older and less certain — it has been connected both to a word for a throwing axe, the francisca, and to a word meaning "free", which is why you sometimes see "free man" given as the meaning.

Franciscus → Francesco → Francis / Frances → Frank → Frankie

How it traveled

Frankie reaches children by two roads that happen to meet at one spelling. For girls it is the pet form of Frances and Francesca; for boys, of Frank, Francis and Franklin — and all of those descend from the Latin Franciscus, the name given to Giovanni di Bernardone of Assisi in the twelfth century and carried across Europe after him.

Out loud, and in short

Emerie

EM-uh-ree

Three syllables, stress on the first. Identical in sound to Emery and Emory; a two-syllable EM-ree also occurs in fast speech.

  • Em — The default informal short form, shared with Emma, Emily and Emerson.
  • Emmy — Informal, and long established as a given name in its own right.
  • Emmie — Spelling of Emmy that matches the -ie ending of the full name.
  • Emme — Used both as a nickname and, in recent decades, as a standalone name.
  • Also Ree.

Frankie

FRANK-ee

Two syllables, stress on the first. The spelling gives it away on sight, which is not true of every nickname-name. Franky is a recognized variant spelling.

  • Frank — The older short form, long established as a given name in its own right for boys; also used affectionately for a Frankie of either sex.
  • Fran — Informal and unisex, and independently a standalone name in Spanish and Croatian.
  • Frannie — Affectionate, mostly used within families.
  • Franks — Casual, surname-style address among friends and teammates.

The trade-offs, name by name

Emerie

Strengths

  • Sounds exactly like Emery, a spelling most Americans already recognize, so it is understood the first time it is said aloud.
  • Comes with short forms in long use — Em, Emmy, Emme — none of which need explaining.
  • Traceable in the written record for roughly a thousand years, from Germanic Emmerich through Norman Aimery to English Emery.

To consider

  • The sound has at least four live spellings — Emery, Emory, Emerie, Emmerie — so expect to spell it out at the pharmacy and on forms, for life. Choosing the -ie form means accepting that most people's first guess will be Emery.
  • Emery is given to boys and girls alike in the US. The -ie ending reads as a girl's name to most American eyes, but the spoken name carries no such signal, so a substitute teacher may guess either way.
  • It sits inside a crowded Em- family — Emma, Emily, Emerson, Emmy. A child may not meet another Emerie, but she will likely answer to Em alongside two or three others.

Frankie

Strengths

  • Spelled and pronounced correctly on first sight by almost anyone who reads English — no repeating, no correcting.
  • Works on either a girl's or a boy's page, and has done for generations, so it never has to be adjusted.
  • Has ready formal versions waiting if a longer name is ever wanted on a document: Frances, Francesca, Francis, Franklin.

To consider

  • The spelling is used for both girls and boys, so a form or a roster will not tell a stranger which to expect. Most Frankies today are girls, which makes it the boys who are likelier to meet a raised eyebrow.
  • It is a diminutive by origin, and some people still hear it that way on a résumé or a diploma. Registering Frances, Francesca, Francis or Franklin as the legal name keeps both options open; skipping that is a fine choice too, just a deliberate one.
  • The name is still strongly represented among much older generations, so it may be read as a name from an earlier era rather than a current one — though it has never left the records long enough to feel unfamiliar.
