The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Elowyn
elm tree, through the Cornish name Elowen
Cornish elowen means 'elm', and Elowen is a documented modern Cornish given name — that is the reading most often given. But this particular spelling is an English-language one, and the -wyn ending belongs to a different tradition: Welsh gwyn/wyn, 'white, fair, blessed', seen in Elwyn and Bronwyn. Whether Elowyn is Elowen respelled or a fresh blend of El- and -wyn is not settled, and both readings are live.
elowen (Cornish, 'elm') → Elowen → Elowyn
How it traveled
The clearest root is Cornish: elowen, the elm, one of a set of nature words taken up as given names as Cornish was written and taught again through the twentieth century, alongside forms like Morwenna and Lowena. Elowen traveled from Cornwall into wider English use as parents looked for names that were gentle but unworn.
Sylvia
Of the wood, of the forest
The Latin silva is a wood. The name was Silvia in Rome and acquired its y in the Renaissance, when scholars respelled Latin words to look more Greek than they were. The meaning has never been in dispute.
Silvia → Sylvia
How it traveled
The word took a long and strange road into English. From silva, a wood, Latin made silvaticus, meaning of the woods — used of plants that grew wild rather than in gardens, and then of animals and people who lived outside settlements.

Out loud, and in short
Elowyn
EL-oh-win
Three syllables, stress on the first. Some families say EL-uh-win, with the middle vowel relaxed. The Cornish Elowen is often heard with the stress in the middle instead, e-LOW-en.
- Ellie — The most common short form; long established in English and widely used as a standalone given name in its own right.
- El — Informal, one syllable, mostly within the family.
- Winnie — Informal, drawn from the second half of the name; also stands alone as a given name.
- Lo — Informal and clipped from the middle syllable; less common than the El- forms.
Sylvia
SIL-vee-uh
Three syllables, stress at the front. The y is silent as a change and sounds exactly like the i it replaced.
- Syl — The front clipped, plain and durable.
- Via — The ending taken alone, which is a name in its own right now.
- Silky — Arrived at by sound rather than spelling, a household form.

The trade-offs, name by name
Elowyn
Strengths
- Comes with Ellie ready-made — a short form so familiar in English that no one needs it explained.
- Every sound in it is common in English, so it is easy to say correctly on first hearing.
- Sits in a recognizable family of names, between Cornish Elowen and Welsh-looking Bronwyn and Rowan.
To consider
- Elowen, Ellowyn and Elowynn all exist, and none of them is the obvious default. Expect to spell it out often, and expect the occasional Elowen coming back at you in writing.
- It is climbing quickly. A name that guarantees she is the only one in her class now may be shared with a few others by the time she is in middle school.
- Almost everyone carrying this spelling is a small child, so there are no adult Elowyns to hear it on — you are hearing it early rather than late.
Sylvia
Strengths
- The meaning is concrete, settled and pleasant, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.
- It is spelled almost identically across Europe and understood everywhere.
- It has been in continuous use for two thousand years without becoming a cliché.
To consider
- Silvia and Sylvia are both standard, so the spelling will be checked.
- The name is strongly associated with particular decades in America, though it never disappeared.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well, though it belongs overwhelmingly to the girls.
