II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Dexter

'dyer' (one who dyes cloth), from the English surname; or 'right-handed, skillful' in Latin

The surname route is the documented one: Middle English *dexter*, *dyestere*, an occupational term for a dyer, originally a feminine agent noun in -ster that later applied to men too. Running alongside it is Latin *dexter*, 'on the right hand', hence 'skillful, favorable' — the root behind English *dexterity* and the heraldic *dexter* side of a shield. Both readings are genuinely attached to the name; the English trade word explains the surname, the Latin word explains much of the name's later appeal.

Old English dēag ('dye') → Middle English dyestere / dexter ('dyer') → Dexter (English surname) → Dexter (given name)

How it traveled

In medieval England, a dyer of cloth could be recorded as a *dyestere* or *dexter*, and the trade word became a hereditary surname in the way trade words often did — Baker, Fletcher, Webster. Surnames of that kind crossed to America and, in the nineteenth-century New England fashion for family names as first names, began appearing on baptismal and census records as given names.

Donald

world-ruler

Gaelic Domhnall descends from an older Celtic compound, dumno-valos, joining the words for world and rule — a chieftain's name of the plainest and most ambitious kind. The derivation is well attested and appears in early Irish and Scottish sources. Two kings of the Picts and Scots carried it in the ninth century, before the kingdom had its modern name, which puts it among the earliest recorded personal names in Scotland.

Dumnovalos → Domhnall → Donald

How it traveled

England borrowed almost nothing from Gaelic for centuries and then, in the eighteen-hundreds, took a great deal at once — Donald, Malcolm, Douglas, Kenneth, Ian — largely on the strength of Walter Scott and a romantic view of the Highlands that arrived a generation after the Highlands had been cleared. Donald became one of the most-used men's names in America by the nineteen-thirties.

Out loud, and in short

Dexter

DEK-ster

Stress on the first syllable. It has one pronunciation everywhere in English, and the spelling gives it away on sight.

  • Dex — The standard short form, used informally and increasingly given on its own as a full first name.
  • Dexy — A family-and-childhood diminutive rather than an adult one.

Donald

DON-uld

DON-uld, two syllables, stress at the front, the second vowel reduced. Gaelic Domhnall is closer to DOH-null, with the mh silent and the vowel long, which is a noticeably different name and the older one.

  • Don — The front clipped, and a complete working name; what most Donalds go by.
  • Donnie — The same softened, and a standing name of its own with a long American history.
  • Donal — The Irish spelling, used as a formal alternative in Irish families.

The trade-offs, name by name

Dexter

Strengths

  • Comes with Dex built in — a one-syllable short form that works from the playground through a working life, and that stands alone as a name in its own right.
  • Spelled the way it sounds; almost no one will need it repeated or corrected.
  • On American birth records continuously since such records began, so it reads as familiar rather than newly coined.

To consider

  • The Showtime series *Dexter*, which ran from 2006 and starred a blood-spatter analyst who was also a serial killer, is the association many adults reach for first. It has faded with time, but it has not disappeared.
  • The cartoon *Dexter's Laboratory*, from the mid-1990s, gave the name a boy-genius-in-glasses image for a whole generation of viewers — harmless, but it is out there.
  • It is stepping back gradually from its high point rather than rising, so it sits in the quieter middle of the register: known to everyone, common nowhere.

Donald

Strengths

  • The Gaelic history behind it is genuinely ancient and well documented.
  • Don is a complete working short form that needs no explanation.
  • It has been in continuous English use for two centuries and in Gaelic use for a thousand.

To consider

  • The cartoon duck is the first association for a great many people and has been for ninety years.
  • The name has also been strongly associated with particular public figures in recent decades, which changes what a room hears.
  • It is very strongly represented among older generations in America.
