II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Dax

Not established

As a given name, Dax carries no established translation. What is documented is the source: Dax is a spa town in the Landes region of southwestern France, whose name traces back through the medieval form d'Acqs to the Roman settlement built around its hot springs, and it survives as a French surname. The English surname Dax is separate and of uncertain origin. None of that was attached to the first name as a meaning — it arrived as a sound and a surname, not as a word.

Dax (Gascon town) → Dax (French surname) → Dax (given name)

How it traveled

Dax is first of all a place: a town in Gascony known since Roman times for its thermal waters, and a surname carried by families from that corner of France. It reached American first names through print — Harold Robbins gave the hero of his 1966 novel The Adventurers the name Diego "Dax" Xenos, and the film that followed put the sound in front of a wider audience.

Tomas

twin

From Aramaic te'oma, 'twin'. The Gospel of John glosses the apostle's name with the Greek word Didymos, which means the same thing.

Te'oma (Aramaic) → Thomas (Greek) → Thomas (Latin) → Tomás / Tomáš → Tomas

How it traveled

The name begins in Aramaic as te'oma, 'twin', and reaches the wider world through the apostle called Thomas in the Gospels — the one the Greek text also names Didymos. Greek and Latin carried it across the Mediterranean, and medieval Christendom spread it into nearly every European language, where each one filed down a different edge: Thomas in England and France, Tommaso in Italy, Tomasz in Poland, Tomás in Spain, Portugal and Ireland.

Out loud, and in short

Dax

DAKS

One syllable, rhyming with fax. There is no competing pronunciation in English, and the French town is said the same way.

  • Dax — Already a full given name in its own right, and also the everyday short form for boys registered as Daxton.
  • Daxy — A family diminutive, used mostly in the toddler years and rarely outside the house.
  • D — The initial-only nickname common among teammates and school friends.

Tomas

TOH-mahs

English speakers usually stress the first syllable. In Spanish and Portuguese the accented form Tomás puts the stress on the second: toh-MAHS. Both are correct for their own language, so it helps to decide early which one your family will use.

  • Tom — The universal short form across English and most European languages; also stands alone as a given name.
  • Tommy — Informal and affectionate, common from childhood on; used as an independent given name too.
  • Tomi — Informal, familiar in Spanish- and Lithuanian-speaking families.
  • Tomasito — Spanish diminutive, used within families rather than at school or work.
  • Also Tomy.

The trade-offs, name by name

Dax

Strengths

  • One syllable, spelled the only way it sounds — almost nobody will need it repeated or corrected in writing.
  • Needs no nickname and shrinks to nothing, so it reads the same on a kindergarten cubby and a work email.
  • Identical in French, Dutch and English, with no respelling required when it crosses a border.

To consider

  • It sits in a crowded sound family — Max, Jax, Pax, Zax — so it can be misheard on the phone or in a noisy classroom, and it may echo other boys' names in the same year group.
  • The wave is recent and the bearers are overwhelmingly young, so for now the name reads as a child's name rather than one with adult company behind it.
  • Rhyming with fax, tax and axe gives playground wordplay an easy hook, though the words themselves are harmless enough.

Tomas

Strengths

  • Shortens to Tom and Tommy without any explanation needed anywhere in the English-speaking world.
  • Works unchanged in Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Lithuanian, Swedish and Norwegian — a rare thing for a name this short.
  • A documented line running from Aramaic through Greek and Latin into nearly every European language.

To consider

  • It will be written as Thomas by people who are not listening carefully — on forms, in emails, on class lists. Most bearers make peace with correcting it.
  • The accent is a lifelong small decision: Tomás is standard in Spanish and Portuguese, but American systems drop diacritics constantly, so the two spellings will follow him around.
  • Stress shifts between languages, so relatives may say the name differently from teachers. Families generally settle this by simply choosing one and repeating it.
