Where each name comes from
David
beloved
The traditional reading takes it from Hebrew dod, beloved or uncle. A second account connects it with an Akkadian and Mari word for a commander or chieftain, which would make it a title rather than a name. Beloved is the older and commoner reading; neither has been settled.
Dawid → David
How it traveled
The Tel Dan stele matters because it is hostile: it is an enemy's victory inscription, written within about a century and a half of the events, and it refers to the ruling house of Judah by its founder's name as a matter of routine. That is a very different kind of evidence from a text written by people with an interest in the story.
Gabriel
God is my strength
From Hebrew Gavri'el, joining gever, 'strong man,' with El, 'God.' Some translators render it 'man of God' rather than 'God is my strength'; both work from the same two elements.
Gavri'el (Hebrew) → Gabriēl (Greek) → Gabriel (Latin) → Gabriel
How it traveled
The name is Hebrew, first attested in the Book of Daniel, where Gabriel is the figure who explains visions. The Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures wrote it Gabriēl, Latin kept that spelling, and from Latin it spread through the whole Christian world; the Qur'an gives the same angel as Jibril.

Out loud, and in short
David
DAY-vid
Two syllables, stress on the first. Spanish and French put it at the end, da-VEED, with no audible d in the French. Hebrew says da-VEED as well. The English front-loading is the outlier.
- Dave — The default in English; plain, adult and used at work.
- Davy — The warmer form; often kept from childhood into adulthood.
- Dai — The Welsh clip, said DYE; ordinary in Wales and rare elsewhere.
- Dov — Used in Jewish families, where it is also a separate Hebrew name meaning bear.
Gabriel
GAY-bree-ul
That is the usual English pronunciation. Spanish speakers say gah-bree-EL with the stress at the end, and French gah-bree-EL as well; a bilingual household can use both without either being wrong.
- Gabe — The standard English short form, informal, and used well into adulthood by many men who go by it at work.
- Gabi — Used in Spanish, Portuguese, German and Hungarian; also serves as a short form for Gabriela, so it reads either way.
- Gabo — A Spanish-language short form; the writer Gabriel García Márquez was known by it across Latin America.
- Gabri — Informal in Spanish and Italian, mostly among family and friends.
- Also Gav.

The trade-offs, name by name
David
Strengths
- A three-thousand-year record with independent archaeological confirmation of the dynasty.
- The same spelling in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian and Hebrew.
- Four short forms in different languages, all in genuine current use.
To consider
- It has been among the most given names in the English-speaking world for a century, so it carries no signal at all.
- Dave is what most people will settle on, so it is worth liking the short form too.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
Gabriel
Strengths
- Pronounced and spelled recognizably in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese — one of the few names that needs no adjustment crossing those languages.
- A documented record stretching from the Hebrew scriptures through Greek and Latin to the present, with the spelling essentially intact.
- Established short forms in several languages: Gabe in English, Gabi and Gabo in Spanish, Gabri in Italian.
To consider
- Gabi and Gabby are shared with Gabriella and Gabrielle, so a Gabriel who goes by Gabi will sometimes be assumed to be a girl on paper.
- English and Spanish stress it differently — GAY-bree-ul against gah-bree-EL — so a child in a bilingual setting will answer to two versions of their own name.
- The angelic association is close to the surface for many people, which some families want and others would rather not carry.
