Where each name comes from
Colter
'colt herder' or 'ploughman'
Surname scholars trace Colter to two different working lives. One reading takes Old English colt plus the agent ending -er: a keeper of young horses. The other takes the coulter, the iron blade that cut the soil ahead of a plow, used as a byname for the man who drove it. A third strand connects the spelling Coulter to the place of that name in Lanarkshire, Scotland. All three are respectable, and no one has settled which fed the name most.
colt (Old English) → Colter / Coulter (English and Scottish surname) → Colter (American given name)
How it traveled
The name belongs to the large English family of occupational surnames — Baker, Fletcher, Shepherd — where a man was called by what he did all day. Colter and its twin spelling Coulter appear in English and Scottish records as surnames long before anyone thought to hand them to a baby.
Connor
From Irish Conchobhar; the first element is cú, "hound" or "wolf"
The hound element is agreed on. The second, cobhar, is not: it is read either as "desiring" — giving "lover of hounds" or "wolf-lover", the version most often printed — or as "aid, help", giving something closer to "hound of aid". Both are serious readings by Irish scholars, and neither has won.
Conchobar → Conchobhar → Ó Conchobhair / O'Connor → Conor → Connor
How it traveled
Conchobhar was in use in Ireland well before the Norman arrival, borne by kings of Connacht; the last High King of Ireland belonged to the Ua Conchobhair line in the twelfth century, and it is from that family name that the surname O'Connor descends. Irish legend also gives the name to Conchobar mac Nessa, king of Ulster in the tales of the Ulster Cycle, which is why the name turns up in so much retold Irish literature.

Out loud, and in short
Colter
KOHL-ter
One settled pronunciation, with the L clearly sounded — the first syllable rhymes with 'coal'. Spelled as it sounds, so most people get it right on the first try.
- Colt — The standard short form, and a given name in its own right on American records.
- Cole — Informal short form drawn from the first syllable; also stands alone as a separate given name.
- Colty — Family-level nickname, used mostly with small children.
Connor
KON-er
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with "honor" in most American accents. The older Irish spelling Conchobhar is not pronounced like the English version at all.
- Con — The usual informal short form; also an ordinary English word, which some families weigh before using it.
- Conn — The doubled spelling is itself an old Irish given name and is sometimes registered on its own.
- Connie — An older short form, now more often heard as a woman's name in English.
- Conno — A playground and sports-team form, common in Ireland, Britain and Australia.

The trade-offs, name by name
Colter
Strengths
- Spells and sounds the same way on sight: no one has to be taught how to say it.
- Comes with a ready-made short form, Colt, which already stands on its own as an American given name.
- Documented for centuries as an English and Scottish surname, so it is new as a first name but not newly invented.
To consider
- It is climbing quickly, and names on a steep rise tend to mark a narrow band of birth years. Colter may end up sounding of its moment in the way Colton and Carter do now.
- Close neighbors cause slips: expect Colton, Coulter and occasionally Carter on forms and roll calls, and the odd request to spell it.
- The short form Colt is also a firearm brand, an association some listeners make and others never do — worth knowing if Colt is likely to become the everyday name.
Connor
Strengths
- A spelling nearly every English speaker reads correctly at first glance, and one no one has to spell out over the phone in a general sense.
- Documented in Ireland since the early medieval period — an unbroken line from Conchobhar through the O'Connor surname to the modern first name.
- In steady use across the United States, Ireland, Britain, Australia and New Zealand, so it travels without translation.
To consider
- Connor, Conor and Conner all sound identical, so expect a lifetime of light corrections. Choosing the spelling you like best and saying it clearly the first time solves most of it.
- Most people carrying the name in America are young adults right now, so it reads to many ears as belonging to a particular stretch of years rather than as a neutral classic.
- "Con" as a short form doubles as an English word with an unhelpful sense. Plenty of families simply skip it and use the full name.
