Clayton
Farmstead on clay soil
From Old English clæg, 'clay', and tun, 'farmstead'.
clæg tun → Clayton
How it traveled
The Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914, named for Representative Henry De Lamar Clayton of Alabama, declared that 'the labor of a human being is not a commodity or article of commerce', a line labor unions hailed as their charter. Clayton Moore played the Lone Ranger on television through the 1950s and kept appearing in the mask for decades; in 1979 the owners of the character went to court to stop him, and he toured in dark wraparound sunglasses until they dropped the case and he won the right to wear it again.
Preston
priests' settlement, from Old English prēost 'priest' and tūn 'farmstead, enclosure, town'
prēosta tūn (Old English) → Prestune → Preston (place name) → Preston (surname) → Preston (given name)
How it traveled
Preston is one of the most common English place names, formed from the Old English elements prēost and tūn — land belonging to or supporting priests. It turns up across England, from Lancashire to Kent to Sussex, and appears in medieval records in spellings like Prestune.

Out loud, and in short
Clayton
KLAY-tun
Two syllables with the stress on the first.
- Clay — The usual short form; also a given name on its own.
Preston
PRESS-tun
Stress on the first syllable. The spelling gives the sound away, so it survives phone calls and roll calls intact.
- Pres — The main short form in informal use; not usually given as a name on its own.
- Prez — A spelling of the same short form, more often written than spoken.
- Presto — Playful, family-and-friends territory rather than anything used on paper.

The trade-offs, name by name
Clayton
Strengths
- Instantly recognized and easy to spell.
- Comes with Clay as a ready short form.
- A long, steady American history.
To consider
- As a surname-first name it may be taken for a last name on forms.
- It is familiar enough that a Clayton may share the name with a classmate.
- For a girl it would be very unusual.
Preston
Strengths
- Spelling and pronunciation match: almost no one hears Preston and writes something else, or reads it and says it wrong.
- A documented history reaching back to Old English place names, still visible on English maps today.
- On US birth records continuously for well over a century, so it reads as neither new nor old-fashioned.
To consider
- It sits in a large family of -ton and -den surname names, so it may blend into a class list of similar-sounding boys even when no other Preston is there.
- Still very much a surname as well as a first name, which some families like and others find formal.
- The literal meaning is religious — priests' land — and while nobody hears that in daily use, it is worth knowing if that matters either way to you.
