The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Cassian
From the Roman family name Cassius; the meaning of Cassius itself is not settled
One reading connects Cassius to the Latin adjective cassus, 'empty, hollow, vain'. Another holds that Cassius, like many of the oldest Roman clan names, is pre-Latin — plausibly Etruscan — and simply cannot be translated. What is not in doubt is the shape of the word: Cassianus is the standard Latin way of saying 'of the Cassius family', the same pattern that gives Julianus from Julius and Aemilianus from Aemilius.
Cassius → Cassianus → Cassien → Cassian
How it traveled
Cassius was one of the old Roman clan names, and Cassianus was formed from it in the ordinary Roman way to mark descent or adoption. Christianity gave the longer form its long life: Cassian of Imola, a schoolmaster martyred in the fourth century and later taken as a patron of teachers, and John Cassian, whose Institutes and Conferences shaped Western monastic rule for a thousand years.
Noel
Christmas; birthday
From Old French noel, from Latin natalis (dies), 'birth day' — the nativity. The same Latin root gives Natalie and Natalia.
natalis (dies) → noel (Old French) → Nowell → Noel
How it traveled
The Latin phrase natalis dies, 'day of birth', narrowed in Christian use to mean the Nativity, and in Old French became noel — both the feast and the shout of celebration in carols. Medieval England took it as a given name for children born at Christmastide, and it stuck so well that it became a hereditary surname, spelled Nowell, which is how the old Cornish carol printed in the early nineteenth century still writes it.

Out loud, and in short
Cassian
KASS-ee-un
Two pronunciations are both in real use: KASS-ee-un in three syllables, and KASH-un in two, the way 'Christian' collapses. Expect to state your preference more than once.
- Cass — The default short form in English, and one shared with Cassandra, Cassidy and Cassius, so it is not specific to this name.
- Cash — An informal stretch from the first syllable; also stands on its own as a given name in current American use.
- Cas — Same sound as Cass, spelled short; common in writing and messages.
- Cassie — Used affectionately by family; more often attached to girls' names, so many boys drop it early.
- Also Sonny.
Noel
noh-EL
Stress falls on the second syllable in English and French alike. The French spelling Noël uses the diaeresis to show the two vowels are said separately; without it, English speakers arrive at the same place anyway. The surname spelling Nowell is sometimes said NOH-ul.
- No — Informal and family-only; the name is short enough that most bearers use it whole.
- Elle — Used by some girls named Noel, borrowed from the Noelle side; stands alone as a given name too.
- Noely — An affectionate childhood form, rarely carried into adult use.

The trade-offs, name by name
Cassian
Strengths
- A documented line from Roman Cassius through Latin Cassianus to the modern spelling — an unbroken record of use going back to late antiquity.
- Recognizable across French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish, each with a form of the same name.
- Short forms already exist and need no explaining: Cass, Cas, Cash.
To consider
- Two pronunciations compete — KASS-ee-un and KASH-un — and neither is wrong. Deciding which one your family uses before the name is public saves a lot of gentle correcting later.
- The Star Wars association is strong and recent for many adults, which can mean instant recognition or an instant comment, depending on the room. That connection will likely fade as the name settles in on its own.
- Almost everyone carrying it in the United States is very young, so the name currently reads as a small-child name rather than one with grown bearers around to normalize it.
Noel
Strengths
- Short, two syllables, and spelled the way it sounds — no correction routine and no nickname required.
- Works unchanged in English, French and Spanish, which matters in the states where it is strongest.
- A documented line running from medieval England back to Latin, unbroken and easy to explain in a sentence.
To consider
- The Christmas link is permanent and everyone gets it instantly. That is charming for a December baby and a small running joke for a July one — carols, cards, the same greeting every year.
- For a girl, Noelle is the far more expected spelling, so a girl named Noel will meet people who assume a missing -le, and forms and rosters may default to reading the name as a boy's.
- Written by hand or heard over the phone, it can come back as Noelle, Nowell, or the French Noël with its two dots. None of these are hard to fix, but the fixing is lifelong.
