Where each name comes from
Camden
valley name (from Old English denu, 'valley')
The last element is agreed: the Old English denu, a valley. The first element is argued over — readings of the Gloucestershire place name Campden include 'valley with enclosures' and 'winding valley', and the record is too thin to pick a winner. Either way it is a landscape name, not a virtue or a lineage.
Campden (Old English place name, from denu, 'valley') → Camden (surname) → Camden
How it traveled
Camden began as English ground — Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire — and became a surname for families from there. The Elizabethan historian William Camden gave the surname its fame, an earldom took it up, and the earl's title was in turn stamped on Camden Town in London and Camden, New Jersey.
Finn
"Fair, bright, white" in Irish — or "a Finn, a northerner" in Old Norse
The Irish route is well documented: Old Irish find, later fionn, meaning fair or bright, the word behind Fionn mac Cumhaill's name. The Scandinavian route is equally real: Old Norse Finnr, used as a byname and personal name, referring to a Finn or Sámi person. Modern bearers may descend from either, and in English-speaking countries the two have simply merged into one spelling.
Find (Old Irish) → Fionn (Irish) → Finn
How it traveled
The Irish Fionn is the older literary presence — the stories of Fionn mac Cumhaill and his warrior band were written down in Irish manuscripts through the Middle Ages, and James Macpherson's Ossian poems of the 1760s carried a version of him across Europe under the name Fingal. Quite separately, Finnr was in ordinary use in Norway, Denmark and Iceland, and traveled south into German and Dutch naming.

Out loud, and in short
Camden
KAM-den
Two crisp syllables; the second is unstressed, as in London's Camden Town.
- Cam — The near-universal short, used from childhood on; it also stands alone on birth certificates.
- Cammy — Informal and affectionate, mostly inside families; used for boys and girls alike.
Finn
FIN
One syllable, rhyming with "win". It sounds the same in English, German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages, which is unusual — most names change shape at a border. The Irish Fionn is closer to "fyun" in parts of Ireland.
- Finn — Stands alone as a full given name, and also serves as the everyday short form of Finnegan, Finley, Fintan, Finbar, Phineas and Griffin.
- Finny — Informal, mostly used within families and by younger children; rarely appears on paperwork.
- Fin — A trimmed spelling seen in casual writing and usernames rather than on birth certificates.

The trade-offs, name by name
Camden
Strengths
- Comes with Cam built in — a short form that needs no explaining.
- Spelled exactly as it sounds, with no rival spelling in wide use.
- True of either child: the spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys, and it reads cleanly on both.
To consider
- Class lists now hold many Cam- names — Camden, Kamden, Camren, Cameron — and they blur together aloud.
- It is also two well-known city districts; Londoners and New Jerseyans will each hear their own first.
- Though recorded for both, nearly every Camden is a boy — a girl with the name will regularly meet surprised expectations, which some families count as a feature.
Finn
Strengths
- Four letters, one syllable, spelled the way it sounds — an American teacher, a German cousin and a Scottish grandparent will all read it correctly on sight.
- Charts in Scotland and in England and Wales as well as the US, so it stays legible on both sides of the Atlantic.
- Works as a complete name or as the short form of Finnegan, Finley, Fintan, Phineas and Griffin, which leaves the formal-name decision open.
To consider
- It is short enough that most surnames need checking aloud. Finn plus a one-syllable surname can come out clipped; longer surnames tend to give it more room.
- Because so many longer names shorten to Finn, people may assume it is a nickname and ask what it stands for. A steady answer settles it, but the question recurs.
- The German and Dutch spelling Fynn, plus Finn's own use as a surname, means the occasional double-check on forms — minor, and nothing like the trouble a longer name would bring.
