Where each name comes from
Bonnie
pretty, fine, good-looking
The Scots word, still in everyday use in Scotland, where a bonnie day and a bonnie lass are ordinary phrases rather than quaint ones.
bon → bonnie → Bonnie
How it traveled
Margaret Mitchell's novel appeared in 1936, and in it Rhett Butler's daughter is given a formal name nobody uses and a nickname everybody does. Within a few years American girls were being christened Bonnie outright, with no formal name behind it, which is the reverse of how the name works in Scotland.
Brynn
hill (Welsh)
Welsh bryn is an ordinary landscape word, still in everyday use, and it sits inside longer names such as Brynmor, 'great hill'. The doubled -nn is an English-language respelling rather than a separate word.
bryn (Welsh for hill) → Bryn → Brynn
How it traveled
The root is the common Welsh noun bryn, hill, which is why it turns up so often on maps: Bryn Mawr, 'big hill', Brynmawr in Gwent, and the Pennsylvania Bryn Mawr that Welsh settlers named after a farm back home. As a personal name, Bryn was taken up in Wales during the twentieth century for boys, sometimes as a short form of Brynmor.

Out loud, and in short
Bonnie
BON-ee
Two syllables, weight at the front, the first with the vowel of on. Said the same way in Scotland, America and England, which is rare.
- Bon — Cut to one syllable; used inside families and rarely written.
- Bonnie Lou — A double form common in the American South, used as one unit rather than a name and a nickname.
- Nonnie — A childhood form built from the middle of the name.
Brynn
BRIN
Rhymes with win. The Welsh y in bryn is a short i, so the English and Welsh pronunciations agree; there is no second syllable and no ambiguity to explain.
- Bryn — The single-n spelling used as an informal shortening; also a standalone given name, chiefly for men in Wales.
- Brynnie — Affectionate family form, mostly used with young children rather than in adult or formal settings.
- B — Initial-only, used the way any single-syllable name gets reduced among friends.

The trade-offs, name by name
Bonnie
Strengths
- It is spelled as it sounds and needs no explanation in any English-speaking country.
- It also charts in England, Wales and Scotland, so it travels without becoming strange.
- It works as a full name and as a nickname for Bonita or Yvonne, which gives a family two ways to use it.
To consider
- It is closely tied to one novel and one film for anyone over a certain age.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of boys, though it reads overwhelmingly as a girl's name.
- Bonnie and Clyde is the other association, and it is not going anywhere.
Brynn
Strengths
- One syllable, phonetic, and pronounced the same by English and Welsh speakers alike — nobody has to be corrected twice.
- The meaning is plain and documented: hill, from an ordinary Welsh word still in daily use.
- On American records for generations before it became fashionable, so it is neither new nor tied to one moment.
To consider
- Bryn, Brynn, Brynne and Brinn are all in circulation, so expect to spell it aloud — short work, but a lifelong habit.
- In Wales and among Welsh speakers, Bryn is a man's name. A Brynn traveling in Britain may meet men who share the sound.
- It grew alongside a crowded set of similar openings — Brynlee, Brinley, Brielle — and can be misheard as one of them on a first introduction.
