The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Baylor
from an English surname in the Bailey family, most likely 'bailiff, steward'
The surname group behind Bailey and Baylor has two serious readings: an occupational one, from Middle English bailli, 'bailiff' — an officer or steward — and a topographic one, from bailey, the outer wall or courtyard of a castle. The -or ending of Baylor points toward the occupational side, since it looks like an agent noun, but the two lines have been tangled in English records for centuries.
bailli (Old French/Middle English, 'bailiff, steward') → Bailey → Bayler → Baylor
How it traveled
The name comes out of English surname stock, a variant of Bailey, and it traveled to America as a family name long before anyone used it in front of one. Its best-known American bearer gave it a permanent home in the South: Baylor University, named for the judge and Baptist minister Robert Emmett Bledsoe Baylor and chartered while Texas was still a republic.
Khalil
friend, close companion
From the Arabic root kh-l-l. The same root gives khullah, deep friendship. The epithet Khalīl Allāh, friend of God, is applied to Abraham.
khalīl (Arabic) → Khalīl Allāh → Halil (Turkish) → Khalil
How it traveled
The name is Arabic, built on a root that describes intimate friendship rather than mere acquaintance, and it became a fixture of Muslim naming largely through Abraham's title Khalīl Allāh. From Arabic it traveled with Islam into Turkish as Halil, into Persian and Urdu, and into the Balkans, where Bosnian families have used Halil for generations.

Out loud, and in short
Baylor
BAY-ler
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with tailor and sailor. Almost no one hesitates over how to say it; the spelling is the part that needs repeating.
- Bay — The usual short form, and a standalone given name in its own right for some families.
- Bayls — Informal, mostly among friends and teammates.
- B — Initial-only nickname, common at home and in sibling talk.
Khalil
kah-LEEL
Stress falls on the second syllable. In Arabic the opening kh is a throaty fricative, closer to the ch in Bach; in American English it is almost always simplified to a plain k, and both are accepted without fuss.
- Khal — Informal clip used among friends and family; rarely written down.
- Kal — Anglicized short form, sometimes preferred by bearers who tire of correcting the kh.
- Leel — Family-level nickname taken from the stressed second syllable.

The trade-offs, name by name
Baylor
Strengths
- Sounds instantly familiar to American ears — it shares its shape with Taylor, Bailey and Tyler — so it is understood the first time it is said aloud.
- Works unchanged for a boy or a girl, with no separate feminine or masculine spelling to negotiate.
- Has a ready short form, Bay, that stands on its own.
To consider
- It will be heard as Bailey and written that way often. Expect to spell it — B-A-Y-L-O-R — for the rest of the child's life, on forms, at coffee counters and in email addresses.
- The university association is strong and follows the name everywhere: school colors, football Saturdays, and whatever that institution happens to be in the news for. Some families like the tie; others find it decides too much.
- It is recorded for both boys and girls but leans to boys, so a girl named Baylor may meet the assumption of a boy on paper — easily corrected, but worth expecting.
Khalil
Strengths
- Works across Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Urdu and Bosnian-speaking communities, so it travels without translation.
- Reads phonetically for most English speakers on the first try, with stress on the second syllable.
- Has been on American records continuously for decades, familiar to teachers and clerks without ever being commonplace.
To consider
- Three spellings circulate in English — Khalil, Kahlil and Khaleel — and Gibran's book has made Kahlil the one many Americans picture first. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
- The Arabic kh will usually come out as a plain K in an American mouth. Some families make peace with that; others correct it for life.
- Short forms are thin on the ground. Khalil tends to be used in full, which suits some households and frustrates others.
