II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Atreus

traditionally read as "fearless" — but the reading is not secure

Greek tradition linked the name to ἄτρεστος (atrestos), "unflinching, not trembling". Many modern scholars instead class Atreus as pre-Greek — a name already old when Greek speakers inherited it, with a meaning no longer recoverable. Both readings are seriously held, so the honest answer is that the "fearless" gloss is ancient and attractive rather than proven.

Ἀτρεύς (Ancient Greek) → Atreus (Latin) → Atreus (English)

How it traveled

Atreus (Ἀτρεύς) belongs to the earliest layer of Greek myth as a king of Mycenae, father of Agamemnon and Menelaus. Homer's Iliad refers to those two constantly by the patronymic Atreides, "son of Atreus", and in the fifth century BC Aeschylus made the cursed house of Atreus the spine of his Oresteia.

Seth

appointed, placed

The reading comes from the Hebrew verb shith, 'to set or place', and Genesis 4:25 makes the connection explicit: Eve names her son because God has appointed her another child in place of Abel.

Shet (Hebrew) → Sēth (Greek) → Seth (Latin) → Seth (English)

How it traveled

The name is Hebrew — Shet — and belongs to the third son of Adam and Eve in Genesis, the one through whom the genealogies continue. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible rendered it Sēth, Latin kept that spelling, and English inherited it unchanged, which is why the modern form looks so close to the original.

Out loud, and in short

Atreus

AY-tree-us

AY-tree-us is the usual American pronunciation and the one used in the video games. Closer to the Greek is AH-treh-oos, and some families use uh-TRAY-us. Any of the three is defensible, so it is worth settling on one early and saying it the same way every time.

  • Trey — The most natural English clipping from the middle of the name; also long established as a given name in its own right in the US.
  • Atti — Informal, family-level; follows the same pattern by which Atticus gives Atti.
  • Ace — Informal playground-style shortening from the opening sound; stands alone as a name too.

Seth

SETH

One syllable, rhyming with 'breath'. There is only one pronunciation in English, and the spelling gives it away completely.

  • Sethy — Almost entirely a family diminutive used with small children; rarely survives into school years.
  • Sethie — A spelling variant of the same affectionate childhood form; informal only.

The trade-offs, name by name

Atreus

Strengths

  • A documented name with a continuous written record from Homer onward — not a modern coinage, whatever its current chart movement suggests.
  • One spelling in Greek, Latin and English, so there is no competing variant to correct.
  • Three syllables ending in -us, a shape American ears already know from Atticus, Julius and Marcus.

To consider

  • The myth is genuinely dark. The house of Atreus involves a curse, a murdered brother's children served at a banquet, and generations of revenge. Nobody will quiz a preschooler about it, but a classics teacher may raise an eyebrow, and it is better to know now than later.
  • For many people the name means one specific video game character. That association is strong right now and may fade, or may date the name to a particular stretch of years — the same way film and song names have before.
  • Expect to spell it and to correct the stress. Atrius, Atreius and confusion with Atticus are all likely, and AY-tree-us versus AH-treh-oos will come up more than once.

Seth

Strengths

  • Spelled exactly as it sounds, and short enough that nobody asks twice — a rare combination in a biblical name.
  • A documented record stretching from Genesis through Greek and Latin scripture into continuous English use since the Puritans.
  • Recognizable in most European languages, which read it with only small adjustments to the ending.

To consider

  • The final -th does not exist in Spanish, French, Portuguese or most Asian languages, so the name is often heard and repeated as 'Set' or 'Seth-uh' outside English.
  • It resists shortening. Beyond a childhood 'Sethy', there is no nickname waiting, which suits some families and leaves others without an affectionate register.
  • The Egyptian god Set is written Seth in older scholarship and shows up that way in mythology books and video games. It is an unrelated name, but the overlap occasionally gets mentioned.
