The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Aria

Air, or a solo song in opera (Italian); separately, a feminine form of Hebrew Ari, lion

The Italian reading is the one most English speakers hear: aria, from Latin aer, meaning air, and by extension the operatic solo. A second road runs through Hebrew, where Ari means lion and Aria is used as a feminine form of it. A third belongs to Persian, where Arya is an old ethnonym long used as a given name in Iran. All three are real; which one applies depends on the family.

Latin aer → Italian aria → Aria

How it traveled

Latin aer gave Italian aria, and Italian opera gave the word its second life as the name for a solo song. As opera spread across Europe, the term was borrowed rather than translated, so aria is already a familiar word in English, French, German and Spanish.

Luna

Moon

Directly from Latin lūna, 'moon' — the same root behind English 'lunar'.

Latin lūna (moon) → Luna (Roman goddess of the moon) → Luna

How it traveled

The word came first: lūna, the Latin for moon, which in Roman religion was also a goddess, worshipped alongside Sol and matched in Greek myth by Selene. Because Latin gave way to Italian, Spanish, Catalan and Romanian, 'luna' survived as an everyday word in each of them, which is why the name feels native in so many places at once.

Out loud, and in short

Aria

AR-ee-uh

Three syllables, stress on the first. Some families say AH-ree-uh with a broader opening vowel; both are widely heard and neither needs correcting.

  • Ari — The usual short form, and a standalone given name in its own right for both girls and boys, especially in Hebrew-speaking families.
  • Ria — Informal; also used independently as a given name in Dutch, German and Indonesian.
  • Ree — Purely informal, family-level.

Luna

LOO-nuh

Said the same way in English, Spanish and Italian, with a slightly crisper final vowel in the latter two: LOO-nah. Very little room for error in any of them.

  • Lu — The most common short form; informal, used at home more than on paper.
  • Lulu — Affectionate, and a stand-alone given name in its own right in English and French.
  • Lunita — Spanish diminutive, used affectionately in Spanish-speaking families.
  • Luney — Heard informally, though the sound-alike 'loony' means some families steer away from it.

Is it right for you

Choose by what you want

Choose Aria if you want…

  • a name on the way upup 1 places on the charts in five years
  • a name with more sound in itAria runs 3 syllables, Luna 2
  • a name that charts abroad tooAria is on the national lists of Canada, Scotland, England & Wales and France
  • a newer arrivalAria entered the US charts in 1900

Choose Luna if you want…

  • a name past its most crowded yearsLuna is stepping back from its peak
  • a name with fewer syllablesLuna is 2 syllables to Aria's 3
  • a long American recordLuna was already in use when US records began in 1880

The trade-offs, name by name

Aria

Strengths

  • Spelled the way it sounds, and short enough to fit any form or signature without abbreviation.
  • Already a working word in Italian, French, German, Spanish and English, so it rarely needs explaining abroad.
  • Has two ready short forms, Ari and Ria, each of which also stands alone as a name.

To consider

  • Arya is a common competing spelling, so expect to say "Aria, with an i" fairly often over a lifetime.
  • It sits in a crowded sound-family — Ariana, Arya, Aaliyah, Amaya — and may be misheard as one of those on first introduction.
  • The name's wave in the US is very recent, so it reads as a young person's name for now; that changes as this generation grows up.

Luna

Strengths

  • One spelling, one pronunciation. Almost no one will need to ask how to write it or say it.
  • Works unchanged in Spanish, Italian and Romanian, where it is also simply the word for the moon.
  • Currently charts in France, Canada and England & Wales as well as the US — it travels without translation.

To consider

  • The name's whole wave is recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. That will pass as this generation grows, but for now it reads young.
  • 'Lunatic' and 'loony' come from the same Latin root, and children find that sooner or later. Most Lunas hear it once and move on.
  • It is also a very popular name for dogs and cats, which comes up more often than parents expect.
