Where each name comes from
Alexandria
defender of men
From Greek alexein, 'to defend', and the stem andr-, 'man'. The same two pieces sit inside Alexander and Alexandra.
Alexandros → Alexandreia → Alexandra → Alexandria
How it traveled
The root is Greek: Alexandros, a name attested long before Alexander the Great, with the feminine Alexandra in use in antiquity as well. When Alexander founded his city on the Egyptian coast in the fourth century BC, it took the Greek feminine form of his name — Alexandreia — and other Alexandrias followed him across the ancient world.
Anahi
No single settled meaning — a legend's name, and separately linked to Anahita, 'immaculate, pure'
In the Guaraní legend, Anahí is a person, not a translation: the name arrives attached to a story about the ceibo tree rather than to a dictionary entry, though it is often glossed loosely as a flower name. A separate line connects the spelling to Anahita, the Old Iranian goddess of the waters, whose name comes from anāhita, 'immaculate, undefiled' — the source of Armenian Anahit. Both readings are seriously held, and they do not reduce to one another.
Anahí → Anahi
How it traveled
The name's oldest thread is the Guaraní legend of Anahí, told in the Río de la Paraná region: a young woman who defends her people, is burned, and becomes the ceibo — the tree whose scarlet blossom is now the national flower of Argentina and Uruguay. From that story the name spread as an ordinary given name across Spanish-speaking South America, and later through Mexico, where Spanish-language pop and telenovela stardom in the 2000s gave it a fresh burst of visibility.

Out loud, and in short
Alexandria
al-ig-ZAN-dree-uh
Stress on the third syllable. Some speakers say al-ek-ZAN-dree-uh; both are ordinary and nobody will correct you.
- Alex — The default informal shortening; also a full given name of its own for both men and women.
- Lexi — Widely used informally and independently established as a given name in its own right.
- Lexie — Spelling variant of Lexi, used the same way.
- Alexa — Used as a short form and as a standalone name; now also the name of a voice assistant.
- Also Allie, Sandra.
Anahi
ah-nah-EE
In Spanish the h is silent and the stress falls on the final syllable — the accented spelling Anahí marks it. English speakers commonly say uh-NAH-hee instead, sounding the h and moving the stress. Both are heard in the US, and many families answer to either.
- Ana — The most common short form in Spanish-speaking families, and a complete given name in its own right.
- Anita — Affectionate Spanish diminutive, used at home rather than on forms; also stands alone as a given name.
- Ani — Informal, and a standard given name on its own in Armenian.
- Nahi — Informal short form taken from the back of the name; used within families more than outside them.

The trade-offs, name by name
Alexandria
Strengths
- A spelling almost everyone already knows from the map, so it rarely needs to be spelled out letter by letter.
- Ready-made short forms in real use — Alex, Lexi, Alexa, Sandra — covering both formal and casual registers.
- Documented back to ancient Greek, with an unbroken record on American charts across more than a century.
To consider
- One letter from Alexandra, and the two are constantly swapped. Expect a lifetime of saying 'with an i-a at the end' on forms and in email.
- Five syllables mean other people will shorten it, usually to Alex or Lexi, whether or not that is the plan at home.
- In the United States the full name currently calls to mind one heavily covered member of Congress for many people; how much that registers depends on where you are and how the news is running.
Anahi
Strengths
- Works unchanged in Spanish and English spelling — no accent needed, no letters that shift between the two languages.
- Ready-made short forms already familiar to everyone: Ana and Anita need no explanation.
- Carries a documented story behind it, the Guaraní legend of the ceibo flower, rather than a bare etymology.
To consider
- The pronunciation splits along language lines: silent h and final stress in Spanish, a sounded h and middle stress in most English mouths. Worth deciding early which one you will correct people toward, and which you will let go.
- Spelling will be asked about more than you expect — Anahí, Anahy and Anai all circulate, and the accent tends to be dropped on American paperwork.
- It is far more familiar inside Spanish-speaking communities than outside them, so the amount of explaining involved may depend a good deal on where the child grows up.
