The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Adeline
Noble
From the Germanic element adal, "noble", the same root behind Adele, Adelaide and Alice. Adeline is the French diminutive form of that root — roughly "little noble one".
adal (Germanic element, "noble") → Adela → Adèle → Adeline
How it traveled
The root is Frankish and Germanic: adal, noble, an element that fed dozens of early medieval names. Old French turned Adele into the affectionate Adeline, and Norman speakers carried it across the Channel after 1066, where it settled into English records alongside its cousins Adela and Adelaide.
Iris
Rainbow
From the Greek word iris, 'rainbow'. The flower and the iris of the eye were both named from the same word, for their color.
Ἶρις (Greek) → Iris (Latin) → Iris (English)
How it traveled
Iris is Greek, both a common noun for the rainbow and the name of the goddess who carried messages along it in early Greek poetry. Latin took the word unchanged, and botanists later applied it to the flower, while Greek medical writers used it for the colored part of the eye.

Out loud, and in short
Adeline
AD-uh-line
AD-uh-line, rhyming with "line", is the usual American reading. AD-uh-leen is also common and is closer to the French. Both are correct; you will simply be choosing one and repeating it.
- Addie — The standard informal short form in American use for well over a century; also given on its own, and shared with Addison and Adelaide.
- Ada — Long established as a full given name in its own right, and used as a short form here.
- Lina — Takes the back half of the name; stands alone as a given name in Italian, German and Arabic-speaking families.
- Della — An older short form, historically tied to Adeline and Adela; independently used as a given name among earlier generations.
- Also Adie.
Iris
EYE-ris
Two syllables, stress on the first. French speakers say it closer to ee-REESS, with the stress at the end — worth knowing if the name will be used on both sides of the Atlantic.
- Iri — Informal, used within families; not a standalone given name in English.
- Ri — Informal and occasional; most bearers are called by the full name at every age.

The trade-offs, name by name
Adeline
Strengths
- Short forms are already in place and need no explaining — Addie, Ada, Lina, Della — so the name flexes from formal to casual without effort.
- A documented line running from medieval French through nineteenth-century revival to the present, unbroken in English-language records.
- Recognizable in French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese in nearly the same shape, and charting in Canada as well as the US.
To consider
- Two pronunciations circulate, -line and -leen, so expect to correct people occasionally for life. Choosing early and saying it consistently does most of the work.
- It sits in a crowded field: Adalyn, Adelyn, Adaline, Adelaide and Madeline all sound close, and forms get confused on paperwork.
- The name is rising quickly. It is uncommon in a classroom now, but a child born this year may meet more of them than the current picture suggests.
Iris
Strengths
- Four letters, spelled the way it sounds; almost no one needs it repeated or corrected.
- The same spelling works in French, Spanish, Dutch and German, with only the stress shifting.
- An ordinary English word as well as a name — people already know the flower and the part of the eye.
To consider
- It offers almost no short forms. A child who wants a nickname will have to improvise one, and most bearers simply go by Iris.
- Said quickly, it can be misheard as 'Irish', and it runs together with surnames that begin with S — try the full name aloud before deciding.
- It is climbing steadily rather than sitting still, so it may feel less uncommon by the time your child reaches school than it does now.
