Where each name comes from
Ada
"noble" (Germanic) or "adornment" (Hebrew)
Two separate roads end at the same three letters. The English Ada is usually traced to the Germanic element adal, "noble" — the same element behind Adelaide and Adeline, of which Ada began as a short form. Independently, Adah is a Hebrew name meaning "adornment" or "ornament", borne by two women in Genesis, and that spelling has fed the name too. Neither reading cancels the other; families have used both.
Adalheidis → Adelheid → Adelaide → Ada
How it traveled
Ada began life as a nickname doing a big job: a short handle for the weighty Germanic compounds starting with adal, "noble" — Adalheidis, which became Adelheid in German and Adelaide in English and French. By the early nineteenth century it had cut loose and was being given on its own, helped along by its resemblance to the biblical Adah.
Alaina
Unsettled: 'rock' or 'handsome' if it comes through Alan and Alana, 'torch, shining light' if through Elaine and Helen
Alaina reaches modern use by two roads. One runs through Alan, whose own etymology is unresolved — Breton roots meaning 'rock' and 'handsome' have both been proposed, as has a link to the Alans, a nomadic people whose name appears in early Brittany. The other runs through Elaine, the Old French form of Helen, usually glossed 'torch' or 'shining light', though that reading is debated too. Neither line has been settled, and Alaina is close enough in sound to sit comfortably in both.
Alan → Alain → Alana → Alaina
How it traveled
Alan came to England in the eleventh century with the Breton lords who followed William the Conqueror, and took hold quickly in England and especially Scotland. Feminine forms — Alana, Alanna, Alannah — grew up much later in English-speaking countries, and Alaina is one of that group of spellings.

Out loud, and in short
Ada
AY-duh
Standard in English. In German, Italian, Polish and Turkish the first vowel is open — AH-dah — so relatives abroad may say it differently, and both are correct in their own place.
- Addie — The usual informal shortening in American English; also stands alone as a given name and serves Adelaide, Addison and Adeline.
- Ada — Already a short form itself — in Poland and Germany it is often the everyday name for a formal Adelajda or Adelheid.
- Adie — A less common spelling of the same short form, used in family settings.
Alaina
uh-LAY-nuh
Three syllables, stress on the middle one, with a long A. Occasionally heard as uh-LEE-nuh by readers who take it as a form of Elena, and sometimes read aloud as Alana (uh-LAH-nuh) by people scanning quickly.
- Lainey — The most-used short form; also stands on its own as a given name in the US.
- Laney — Same nickname, the spelling that follows the parent name less closely; used independently as well.
- Ally — Informal, drawn from the first syllable; shared with Allison, Alexandra and Alana.
- Laina — Informal, mostly within the family; keeps the middle of the name intact.
- Also Al.

The trade-offs, name by name
Ada
Strengths
- Three letters, no silent parts, and a spelling almost nobody needs to hear twice.
- Familiar in the US and still charting in England and Wales and in Scotland, so it crosses borders without adjustment.
- An unbroken record in English from the nineteenth century onward, without ever becoming a name every classroom has.
To consider
- In American writing, the letters ADA belong to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the American Dental Association. It rarely causes real confusion in speech, but it does mean the name shares its shape with some very official acronyms.
- Said quickly, Ada can be heard as Ava, Ida or Ana — and Ava in particular is common enough right now that mishearings will happen. Most people get it on the second try.
- The name sits with older generations as much as with young children: an Ada today may find that the other Adas she meets are several decades her senior. That gap is closing, but slowly.
Alaina
Strengths
- Two ready-made nicknames, Lainey and Laney, both of which are established given names in their own right.
- Every sound in it is common in English, so it is easy to say correctly on first sight for most readers.
- Sits in a well-known name family — Alan, Alana, Elaine — which gives it a long, traceable record rather than a recent invention.
To consider
- The spelling has serious competition: Alayna, Elaina, Alana, Alanna and Alannah all sound close or identical. Expect to spell it out at appointments and on forms for life.
- People who know an Alana may default to that pronunciation, uh-LAH-nuh, on a first read. A quick correction usually settles it, but it will happen more than once.
- It shares its nickname territory with Elaine, Alexandra and Allison, so Lainey or Ally may not be uniquely hers in a group of friends.
